MGMAT SC : Astronomical occurrences

by ankit0411 » Fri Sep 14, 2012 1:19 am
Astronomical occurrences can be viewed in a religious light; many people are known to rekindle their faith after the observation of a meteor shower.

A) many people are known to rekindle their faith after the observation of a meteor shower.
B) many people are known to have rekindled their faith once a meteor shower has been observed.
C) there are many known people who have rekindled their faith once a meteor shower has been observed.
D) after a meteor shower is observed, there are many people who have rekindled their faith
E) rekindling their faith is known for many people after a meteor shower is observed.

OA to follow after some discussion. Please discuss each choice.

I think it should be B

C alters the meaning of the sentence
D starts with with a modifier which in this case makes the sentence seem awkward
E introduces the continous verb (rekindling) unnecessarily and is grammatically wrong

Btw A n B
I chose B since it uses past tense just like the first part of the question while A uses present.
I am still unsure .

Correct me if I am wrong . Whats the OA?

I am still not convinced why B wins over A.

I am also not sure between A and B. I particularly didn't like "once a meteor shower has been observed" in B. Why the passive voice when people are the subjects? I am inclined towards A. Request experts to comment.

What IS KNOWN about many people is that they HAVE REKINDLED their faith.
The act of rekindling is NOT happening at the same time as the act is KNOWN.
In A, are known TO REKINDLE (present infinitive) implies that the two events are happening at the same time.
To convey the proper sequence, we need the PERFECT INFINITIVE:
Many people are known TO HAVE REKINDLED their faith.
