Manhattan GMAT Strategy Guides

by Kim » Wed Nov 22, 2006 9:27 am
Hey Smart Guy,

Good question - the difference is significant. Here's the lowdown:

Each of our 5 Math Strategy Guides provides in-depth instruction in one of the GMAT’s principal quantitative content areas: Number Properties (93 pages), Fractions, Decimals, & Percents (81 pages), Word Translations (123 pages), Equations, Inequalities, & VIC’s (123 pages), and Geometry (97 pages).

Each math guide breaks down its particular content area into distinct topics and builds comprehensive content understanding by providing rules, strategies and in-depth examples of how the GMAT tests a given topic and how you can respond accurately and quickly. Each of the many chapter topics in a given Strategy guide is followed by 15 challenging practice problems (NOT GMAT questions - these have no answer choices), progressively increasing in difficulty, and designed to increase your ability from novice to expert in the given topic. Answers with comprehensive explanations follow each problem set.

Our 2 Verbal Strategy Guides each provide in-depth instruction in the GMAT’s principal verbal content areas: Sentence Correction (143 pages), and Critical Reasoning & Reading Comprehension (107 pages).

The Sentence Correction guide takes the guesswork out of grammar by presenting every major grammatical principle and minor grammatical point tested on the GMAT. Each of the chapters provides in-depth examples of how the GMAT tests a given grammatical topic and is followed by 15 challenging practice problems designed to increase your ability from novice to expert in the given topic (again, not GMAT questions).

The Critical Reasoning & Reading Comprehension guide aims to simplify complex arguments and passages by illustrating innovative diagramming techniques designed to build speed and improve accuracy. These techniques are outlined in a step-by-step method and accompanied by numerous examples and sample diagrams with which to measure your progress.

After mastering all of the topics and problem sets in each of the 7 Strategy Guides, you can test your knowledge on problems that have appeared on past GMAT exams, in the The Official Guide. We've categorized all the problems in The Official Guide by topic and subtopic, and each Manhattan GMAT Strategy Guide contains its own categorized list of problems from The Official Guide. These problem lists, organized by subtopic and difficulty level, are designed to help you further refine and practice the skills learned in each content area.

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I'm just getting acquainted with Beat the GMAT, but I will be checking in regularly.

Manhattan books in India.

by aim-wsc » Wed Nov 22, 2006 10:19 am
Dear Kim,

I heard excellent reviews about ManhattanGMAT books.
In fact i never heard a single negative remark about M-G books.

I am from India, like many people here on this forum.

Tha problem is the scarcity of ManhattanGMAT books in India.
I dont have to tell you this since you are a Marketing Director
,,, you know the stuff better than i do

Indian crowd is very keen to know more about GMAT and number of GMAT takers are increasing each day on this side of the world.
Just have a look
or simply hit the Google trends and search for GMAT. ( and get the facts)

Everyone's talking about Manhattan GMAT books here in India but its hardly available.
we had to order it through amazon.com
unfortunately amazon.com doesnt have Indian shop...so had to pay heavy shipping charges.
:(

My point is ManhattanGMAT should provide enough books supplies to Indian book stores...
just a suggestion :)

We're going to have our publisher/distributor take a look at retail options abroad! Thanks so much for the suggestion.

I have used the manhattan gmat books and they are all excellent. I was a know-it-all in math, and yet I learned something new in each of the quant books.

As for the sentence correction book, it is the bible of all sentence correction books. It is as important as the OG.

As important as the sentence correction book is, think the polar opposite for the reading comp/critical reasoning. I say this with one grain of salt, reading comp and critical reasoning is very hard to teach. It almost falls into the category of "either you have it or you don't." The reading comp/critical reasoning book is completely worthless. It adds nothing and is backwards in some of its teachings, esp reading comp. It is clearly not in line with the rest of its fine books.

Hey Career Switcher,

Thank you so much for your candid evaluation of the Critical Reasoning and Reading Comp Strategy Guide. As it turns out, we have been working dilligently on this very issue - for quite some time! AND, starting March 1st (hopefully, you will be through with the test by then so by then it will not be relevant), you will see 8 Strategy Guides.

The CR/RC guide will be no longer. Replacing it are individual guides for each, and their depth will definitely meet ManhattanGMAT standards.

Have a great holiday, and please let me know if I can do anything else to help you along the way.

I will keep you posted on the exact date and options for purchase as soon as I can.

Have a great evening,

Hi there greatman!

Our Word Translations Strategy Guide is where you will find the treasures of permutations, combinations, and probability. Word Translations is one of five math Strategy Guides we offer as part of our curriculum. The others are Number Properties; Equations and Inequalities; Fractions, Decimals, and Percents; and Geometry.

And as mentioned below, our two verbal Strategy Guides are about to become THREE! The brand new Critical Reasoning Guide, and the brand new Reading Comprehension Guide are hot off the presses - soon to be available on our retail website and at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com.

Best,
Kim

I have heard that the new books will be available tomorrow (May 1). Of course, I was originally told they'd be out March 1, and that didn't happen (publishing delays). But my CEO told me last week that they will be out May 1 and he was sure this time.

Crossing my fingers... :)
