MBA Reapplicant Advice: Take Advantage of Feedback Sessions

by , Apr 27, 2010

Dinged at your top choice MBA program? Considering reapplying next year? If your target schools offer feedback sessions, then you should definitely take the opportunity to hear from an admissions committee member what went wrong and what you can do to improve your candidacy next year.

So what did go wrong? Was it your GMAT quant score? Your TOEFL score? A C- you got your freshman year? Your lack of community service? Before your session, jot down some helpful notes so you won't forget to address any of your concerns. That way, when the adcom member asks if you have any questions, you don't freeze up and offer him or her a blank stare (or an awkward silence on the phone). Now is not the time to be shyif you leave that session without the information you were seeking, you'll regret it later when it comes time to construct your new application.

The following five questions are excerpted from Accepted's April featured ebook, Create a Better Sequel: How to Reapply Right to Business School. If the person you're meeting with does not address these questions, you need to make it your duty to raise these questions and get satisfactory answers:

  1. Could you point out areas of weakness in my application that contributed to the rejection?
  2. Were my academic stats competitive?
  3. Was my work experience MBA quality? If not, what can I do to make it more competitive?
  4. Did my essays convey the personal qualities you value? If not, how can I do better?
  5. Did I show why I want to attend your school?
