MBA (I.T.) vs MIS

by shashank_raj » Mon Aug 31, 2015 10:07 am
Hey
I have some queries regarding MBA vs MIS . I have completed my B.E in I.T. (2006) from State University scoring 70 %(3.2 GPA), currently having 8.5 years of experience as Business Analyst/Consultant/QA with 2 US MNC's(fortunate 500 companies) . I am planning to pursue my Masters outside India .
I met few counselor's ,one of them suggested me to go for either MIS or MBA in Information Technology as this will give justification to my IT experience plus my aspiration of staying in IT field . My primary aim is to hit management positions in IT and not so interested in HR/Finance domain . They told me there is no point to go for Master's in Computer Science after 8+ yrs of experience.I have not yet given GMAT/GRE and TOFELL/IELTS. I will be writing my GMAT in November.
Can you please suggest me
1. is MIS related to management with IT subjects ? ( saw few universities course and feel that MIS would help me more )
2. What is difference in MIS and MBA in IT? ( since IT/Project management specialization will come in second year with general MBA , is it more focused to IT vs MIS ? )
3. Job prospect of MIS and MBA in IT ?( How do top Employers see 8.5 yrs + MIS vs 8.5yrs + MBA(I.T.) and future prospects ? )
4. If i choose MIS / MBA in which my work experience will act as added advantage ? Which will benefit more? ( MIS will give more justification to my work ex or MBA ?)
6. GMAT score can be used for both MIS / MBA ?
Thanks in advance !!

Hello Shashank

Both MIS and MBA are very different programs. It all depends on what your future career goals are.
Looking at your experience, I would suggest you to go for MBA over MIS. MIS is more suited for fresh graduates or graduates with only a few years of work experience.

In your case, with over 8 years of experience in IT, you have more or less already covered what an MIS would prepare you for. And in the career hierarchy, if you want to keep going up, you will eventually need an MBA even if you do an MIS at this stage.

As you want to continue in the IT sector, it would be best if you pursue an MBA with a specialization IT. MBA curriculum is more broad and covers many aspects of business. At a higher position in an IT firm, you would need knowledge and expertise in several of these areas.

As far as job prospects are concerned, certainly you will have better opportunities with an MBA.
Also not all business schools offer MIS. Depending on the individual program requirement you would have to see whether GRE or GMAT would be required for the MIS program of a particular university. However, several MIS programs may accept GMAT scores or both.

Hope this helps
All the Best

Given the experience you possess, an MIS from a top college might be slightly difficult but then again so will an MBA. But to answer in sync 1) MIS degree is related to management with IT, but there are again two types of program, i.e MIS and MS in MIS(this one is more management related). 2) The only difference is in the job prospect and the inclination, MIS is more technical with a mix of management, whereas MBA is more management with a slight mix of IT. 3) THe job prospects in both the streams are good, but given the work experience I do feel an MBA will give you more edge and salary package. 5) MBA will have advantage. 6) Yes, GMAT is excepted in both. Also, just a suggestion; take a look at ms in business analytics, you might like it. All the best!!
