Pls advise me on career goal strategy

by siamr » Mon Aug 17, 2015 1:34 am
Hi,

I am a sailor, a marine engineer working on cargo ships engaged in international voyages. Now I have planned to pursue an MBA so as to reach the decision making level of this supply and logistic industry.

I need your advise on my short and long term goals. I am not sure how credible they sound because it's just what I want to do and not sure if the adcoms will like it or consider it professional.

Background - Ship Operation , a logistic part of the big supply chain.

Why Career change - No career growth opportunity in shipping, Even if I stay the highest position I can achieve is of Chief Engineer and I want to reach the top decision making level of the global supply chain, so need a career change.

Long Term Goal- Have seen complexities and problems faced by seafarers. Long term goal is to start a company to cater the needs of seafarers across the globe. A global setup which will connect seafarers to their home country through a supply chain network. They will be able to order retail products from their home country and even personal items from their homes and the same will be delivered at any convenient port of call. However, this requires experience as a supply chain manager, strong networking and capital.

Short Term Goal - To work as supply chain manager, preferably in procurement, for companies which have set a benchmark in global supply chain such as Apple and Amazon. This experience will gradually help me to attain my long term goal.

Please need your initial assessment on my rough outline. I am more concerned about my long term goal ? Does it sounds unprofessional as it won't have a bigger reach (only limited to seafarer community)...

Awaiting your response and suggestion/criticism. Thanks

Hello,
Your background certainly is interesting! I think the variation alone will be an asset for you as an applicant. I have actually worked with people with a similar background, and they have done very well.

Now, to your question of goals: it's always good to align your goals with what MBAs in your field typically do. Are there a lot of people in supply chain with MBAs? For Apple and Amazon, you're heading in a good direction, although you'll want to align your goal companies and post-MBA role with the actual hiring practices for each school you're targeting. Research will be very helpful for you here.

The long-term goal is always more sketchy, because nobody really knows what the world will be like in 15 years. Nonetheless, admissions people will like that you have an industry you know, and which you hope to impact. You can help yourself here by seeing, again, where the MBAs appear in the management of global companies catering to the seafaring industry. I wouldn't necessarily set yourself up as the Maritime Amazon.com, because by 10, 15 years from now, somebody else may have done it already. Rather, perhaps set yourself a research task, to see where MBAs tend to appear in the management of companies in that industry, and target a role that does currently exist. You can always change this long-term goal later, but at least you will be able to flaunt your excellent industry research and knowledge in your essays.

Hope this helps!
