Like many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing did not begin to paint until she was well into middle age.
(A) Like
(B) As have
(C) Just as with
(D) Just like
(E) As did
According to me, second clause begins with action "Perle Hessing did not " so first action should also start with action "As did".
But OA is A.
I know we use Like for comparing nouns and AS for comparing verbs/ actions.
Below 2 sentences seem similar:
Like her brother, laura aced the test
As her brother did,Laura aced the test
please help!
Like vs As

You have an introductory clause ending with the comma. These always introduce a noun, which is why you use 'like' in this scenario.

The problem with your solution (as did) is that it is somewhat nonsensical.vishalwin wrote:Like many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing did not begin to paint until she was well into middle age.

It says "As did many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing did not...
The beginning, "As did many self-taught artists," suggests that the next part of the sentence will describe someone else who ALSO did something. In this sentence, Perle Hessing did not do something.
