700- 1st time. I Beat the GMAT

by Pushkar Roy » Sat Jul 14, 2012 10:50 pm
Hi everyone,

I know I am late and should have written this earlier but as they say its better late than never. So here I go with my story. I took the old GMAT and scored 700(Q-50,V-35,AWA -6.0)

Preperations- I used mainly the OG. Doing it thoroughly. I had finished off the verbal section twice. I had Princeton but I never used them as I thought the questions were easy. I referred to MGMAT RC book which I found quite helpful especially while solving passages that didn't interest me (Civil Rights, History). At this point I must say its important to see which tactic suits you. For example, in RC a lot of people prefer the skim, read question and look for the answer approach. However what worked for me was spend some time and read the passage, read the question and try to answer it if its a general question or go back to the passage for a specific question.

Mock Tests- I took 3 different mock tests. The one that GMAC has is the most accurate and helps you familiarize yourself with the test day software. MGMAT is particularly good once you cross 670-680. However if you continually cross the 700 barrier I suggest you stop solving the test as the questions
get easier and scores get skewed. There was a case where I got 47 in Verbal which I know is not possible. Princeton tests are ok but the scoring algorithm is a lot stricter than GMAT. A 650 there can mean you have crossed 700 in the actual test.

The Big Day- As I read on this forum, everyone took chocolate with them on the test day. So did I. Arrived there on time. Once the test starts, you don't have time to think about anything else. Everything happens in a blur and by the time you reach the end of your Verbal section you're dead tired. Please remember to utilize your breaks well. Go to the restroom, relax your mind. Do everything apart from thinking about the test.I remember saying a quick prayer and clicked Finish Test. To my surprise I got 700 (which was exactly the same score as I got in my GMAC practice tests).

I know you're bored by now but a few pointers before I end.

->Utililize breaks properly. It is of utmost importance.

->Use the error log. I can't stress how helpful it is in understanding your weakness and your strengths.

->OG is the Bible.

->Lastly remember Don't let Fate be your Master, Be the Master of your Fate.

Please do get back to me if you need any help.

Cheers and all the best!!

How many MGMAT tests did you take before you think the scores started becoming skewed?
