Journey to MBA, need advice

by henry12345 » Fri Aug 16, 2013 9:36 pm
Hi all,

my name is Henry and i come from Indonesia.
I got my bachelor double degree on mechatronics engineering in Indonesia and engineering management in Germany.
my GPA is 3.48, i have 1 year work experience as IT staff at a gaming center in Indonesia
and 3 years ongoing experience as operational supervisor/troubleshooter in a insurance company.
It is an ongoing experience because i have 3 years job contract with the company, and i have already worked for a year now.
my position is as a head of branch operational troubleshooter, working for managing problems that occur in specific area at a branch office.

that's a bit of my background. the reason that i want to have an MBA degree is unusual. i am kind of reserved and introverted kind of guy. i enjoyed math and physic when i was young hence i thought engineering will be best suited for me. but after i graduated, i realized that i lack in communication and social skills which are really important for my career/life. then i thought, what should i do to make my worst weakness to become my most powerful strength?
after some thought, i find that business is a complex subject including math, communication, leadership and social skills. since i love learning something new, i think that studying business would be the key.

i start to browse for master degree on business, then MBA degree comes to mind. MBA require no specific bachelor degree, but work experiences instead.
i already go abroad, specifically to Singapore, neighbor country of Indonesia, and visiting the top business schools there, Nanyang business school, NUS business school and INSEAD asia campus.
after talking with representation person from each campus, i realize i lack of work experience, international exposure and leadership skills. therefor, when i come back home, i plan to increase those three aspect.

for the work experience aspect, i have 2 more years job contract which will make 4 years work exp in total
as for international exposure, i have an internship for 1 semester and 1 semester of study at Germany, but i think it is not enough.
as for leadership, i work my best at my current company to be given certain leadership position.

now, my plan is to take a master degree abroad in the next two years, maybe in singapore and work there. then after a couple of years work exp, i will submit my application at INSEAD. by then, i might be already 29 or 30 years old (i am 24 btw). the master degree that i plan to get is accounting. why accounting? coz there is a specific needs of certified accountant at singapore, and i thought it is a good opportunity for me to get more international exposure. to simplify, here is the plan
finish my job contract get master degree, getting certified, then submit MBA application.

it takes a long way, i know, but i dont want to take easier way and end up regretting all of it.

i am sorry if my english is bad, and my story connection is worse. but i welcome you all to give comment and advice that might be useful for me in the future

thank you

Henry
