by showbu » Sun Jan 18, 2009 5:38 pm
Anyone who is planning on a career as an investment banker wants to receive an MBA from an Ivy League University. Phil wants an MBA from Tuck. Therefore, Phil must be planning on a career as an investment banker.

strengthen?

a. all of those who want mba from ivy universities are planning careers as investment bankers

b some investment bankers have mba degrees from ivy universities

c all investment bankers with MBA attended ivy universities

d only those planning on careers as investment bankers want mba from ivy universities

e only those with mba degrees from ivy universities are fully qualified for careers as investment bankers

OA: Spoiler Code A

conclusion :Phil must be planning on a career as an investment banker.

stimulus:anyone who wants 2 become investment banker=>mba frm ivy league
phil wants an mba from ivy league.

This means that people who go to ivy league plan for a career in investment banking only.

thus A says exactly that..if we want to strengthen the conclusion

imo:A

strengthen? Phil wants MBA from tuck but planning on career as investment, so MBA graduates from tuck also has investment banker as career.

d only those planning on careers as investment bankers want mba from ivy universities

IMO B What is OA?

argument : Phil -> wants ivy mba -> so phil plans on investment banker career
strengthen sh'd be : anyone who needs ivy mba plans on investment banker career
A: agrees to this.
D: says only those who plan on investment banker career -> wants ivy mba . reverse argument.
Choose A

on 2nd analysis I agree it reads the same .
I can't explain the difference.
But I'd prefer A to D just b'coz A matches the literal argument style more than D

Why are we not looking at option E here? I find it a better contender.
This time no looking back!!!

The question says Phil wants MBA from Tuck.In this case B is correct which means some investment bankers are from Tuck.

If the question is rephrased as Phil wants MBA from Ivy then Option A is correct.

Premise:

Phil = investment banker
Investment banker ---> MBA; Phil = MBA

The issue with the logic here is the assumption that since investment banker ---> MBA, that MBA ---> investment banker.

Something that STRENGTHENS that link (showing that ALL those who want an MBA are planning to become investment bankers) will be correct.

We tend to have problems with CR when we compare answer choices instead of spending more time with the argument up front. I encourage you not to look at the differences between the choices, and instead WRITE DOWN your interpretation of the argument, and the underlying logic/assumptions first, using them to predict the correct answer.

Notice how when we do this, it becomes obvious that A is correct.

I have a stupid question here ...how 'Tuck'(is it a place or College name?) is related to 'Ivy University'

Please clarify

Tuck School of Business is the name of the business school at Dartmouth, an Ivy League university.
