Is it necessary to go into ...

Is it necessary to go into a corporate or social or entrepreneurial work profile after an MBA?

I just want to go for a PhD because I am interested in academics after working in the corporate world for 7+ years, where I was a consultant.

I mean am I at a major disadvantage if I mention my short term goal as "Going for a PhD" and my long term goal as something along that line as well?

Because, everyone seems to be interested in non-academic pursuits post-mba and it kinda scares me about my chances.

Curious, if your goal is to directly pursue a phd, is an MBA the best path? I would have assumed not, but I might be wrong. cheers, Alex

I want to do business research. Wouldnt an MBA be the right way to go about it?

"business research" seems rather broad. If you are interested in a particular aspect of business, to research, like Marketing, Finance, Operations, Management etc. then it might make sense to do degrees that focus on those areas. Some might do an MBA before focusing, so I am not excluding that path. Probably the best thing to do is ask a few business faculty what academic path they pursued in order to get their phd, and whether pursuing the phd was always part of their academic plan, or they shifted into it at some point ? cheers, alex
