by rjaks » Fri Apr 21, 2017 2:06 am
Hello Experts

Can you please evaluate my profile for INSEAD

GMAT 700
Verbal : 39
Quant : 47
IR : 3 :((
AWA : score awaited

My quant is 65 percentile and IR is 27 Percentile. Do you think this GMAT is acceptable for INSEAD or shall i consider giving the GMAT again ?

Profile :
8+ years of IT experience
Indian Female, working in Singapore in bank. I work in IT division and handle payments.
International exposure : have worked in 3 countries and travelled to 12 +
Differentiating factor : I am a mother and have a 1.5 year toddler. I studied for GMAT while handling baby duties and working long hours at bank
Pretty active with social service responsibilities
Excellent academic and professional record so far

Hi rjaks,

Firstly, great job on managing a score of 700 with a toddler! INSEAD does give a certain amount of weightage to GMAT scores and having a balanced score (ie above 75 percentile) is always advisable. Having said that, GMAT is just one of the parameters. INSEAD also looks at past academics, leadership qualities that you may have displayed, the impact that you have created over the past few years and your career goals.

If you were consistently doing better in practice tests and can take the time out to give GMAT another shot, then do go for it. Else, save your energy and work towards putting up a well-thought and stellar application. After all, GMAT is just one parameter!

All the best! Do let us know if we can help further.

GMAT 700
Verbal : 39
Quant : 47
IR : 3 :(( - INSEAD just announced that they are going to use this in evaluations - however 3 is not a catastrophe. Got someone into Chicago-Booth who had a 1.
AWA : score awaited

**not great, but not fatal. If your mock exams were significantly higher, then yes, but if studying would impact the time you have for applications, I might recommend that you do MBAMATH.com. This is an online self-paced program that helps you develop a secondary transcript for quant courses. Your transcripts are sent directly from the schools and it is commonly accepted as proof of quantitative ability.

Profile :
8+ years of IT experience -
*8 years is well above the average of 5 - this is good*
Indian Female, working in Singapore in bank. I work in IT division and handle payments.
*overrepresented as you know. Hmm. This makes me wonder if maybe you should indeed consider retaking the GMAT. Would like to know more about what you do at work, Any promotions/progression? Experience demonstrating leadership, teamwork and problem solving skills? Is it a brand-name bank?*
International exposure : have worked in 3 countries and travelled to 12 +
*very good to have international work experience, want to also get across a very international mindset, embracing diversity*
Differentiating factor : I am a mother and have a 1.5 year toddler. I studied for GMAT while handling baby duties and working long hours at bank
*This is interesting, might be a good optional essay. But I would prefer a differentiator that would show how you bring a unique contribution or thought/background diversity to INSEAD. Hardship is good but not to paid it as an excuse.
Pretty active with social service responsibilities
*this is good, any substantive roles? Any leadership experience there? Could you get a letter from someone there? This would set you apart*
Excellent academic and professional record so far

This is a profile that could go either way, if you ask me. There is a lot of good stuff going on in it, but you need to be able to present everything just right, which can sometimes be a challenge. You didn't really get into your post-MBA goal and why you need an MBA for example, and that would be an important part of it.

So rather than retaking the GMAT, my recommendation to you would be to give the essay your all, as that will be what sets you apart. It might even be worth getting some professional help for that part.
