Hey Jon ,

Hope you are awesome !
I was going through all the profile evaluations here and found one peculiar thing about all of the posts .
I see there is this "Emphasis" on IIT grads from India . Cause I am from India and I have just completed my b.com (accounting and finance) from a avg.university and have avg.GPA .
So , My question here is a b.com cannot really aim at the top MBA programs ?

Just wondering cause I dont have a good profile as yet . but again i'm 21 . still have 5-6 years in hand for building it up . Hence , my question .

It would be very helpful if you can address this issue , cause i'm starting to think that i should just do my cat and do a normal indian MBA cause I'm not from the iit or engineering background .

Asking ,

There is, there is. Basically this is most relevant for Top 10 US programs where 9 out of 10 Indian students will come from one of the IITs. But if you are looking outside of the Top 10, then it is less influential (meaning the schools take a lot more people from a lot more places).

Hope this answers your questions!

Oh snap !
so basically a guy with a 3 year b.com doesnt stand a chance unless he has done a masters ?
And is it applicable even for the UK b-schools ?

Can you kindly share a few tips on how to overcome this ?
Like I went through the stick on how to overcome the low GPA , same way is there a way I can over come this hurdle ? (Really keen on doing an internationally recognized MBA from the top B-schools).

:)

Well, it has nothing to do with doing a Masters, and yes there is a way to overcome this, although the methods are tough and multiple - basically do really really well at work. And this means you know a few good years of busting it all to make it happen. Not so easy to sustain always. But you can do it, if you at least know.

Soooo thinking forward my tips for what you can do NOW already are:
1. Step up and take a volunteer position at some organization WHERE YOU CAN ADVANCE. It's more than "just helping people", but if you can join an organization which within three years will lead you to a leadership position. And avoid tutoring. Or rather, don't avoid it (it's great for the kids), but avoid it as your ONLY volunteer work. It's too easy, lacks opportunities for promotion, and everyone does it.
2. Do really well in work. How do you do this? I have no idea. But you do. Stay late. Go early. Volunteer for every good opportunity you can find. If you aren't getting those opportunities change jobs, etc. etc.
3. If you have any entrepreneurial dreams, think about how you can work those into your schedule. I mean if you apply with great volunteer work + great work experience, + you are running a company that makes money, things start to look mighty good.
4. Whatever else you can do that might be impressive (TV appearances, publications, speeches, leadership in one thing or another, inventions, and so on)

Hope this helps!!!

Not really. We are thinking about real professional publications that matter a lot to your industry.

now thats a problem .. i think its better if I just do the avg. mba in india and stay happy . from the looks of what ur saying and all the profiles i've gone through . I am pretty sure that top mba and stuff is out of my league .

Anyways thanks for all the help Jon.

Weeeelll, there are also schools OUT of the Top 10 that can give you fantastic opportunities, and from what I hear about average MBA programs in India, they are pretty much continuation of Tech programs, so a bit different from the US MBAs... so think about that too!

Hey Jon ,
I havgiven a fair amount of thought abt what you have said and was looking out for Jobs with b.com and turns out that only jobs available are bpo jobs . where we check the accounts or process the payments a d stuff. The rest of them which requiers analysing and all the fun work require a mba .
It looks like to get a MBA I will first have to do another one ?? Or would these kind of accounting jobs suffice ??

A good accounting job can get you into a great MBA (but not in the top 10). It's a bit the "chicken and the egg" problem... that you want to get an MBA to get into consulting, but to get in the MBA consulting experience would be great...
