I just did not beat the GMAT 670. AWA 5.0

by arora007 » Sat Aug 21, 2010 4:00 am
Alas! I am not a slumdog millionare, I have fallen with a big THUD! instead of a soft landing and applause!!

Got beaten by the GMAT, 49Q 31V add up to a 670 for me! GMAT Verbal proved to be my Nemesis. Can't say what single reason beat me in GMAT, probably it was the poor accuracy in the verbal section which worked against me, or was it the tension before the exam and lack of sound sleep or was it me getting worried as to why the Boldface was not appearing...or was it plain hard luck!!

Thanks to this wonderful forum(Eric & his team), The wonderful, wonderful help given by experts, especially Ian,Tani,Chris,Jose,Rich,Andrea,Ron,Stacey,Mitch,Brian is invaluable, The tons of quality practice material provided by GMATFix, Knewton, Grockit & e-GMAT amazing... that I have reached this far.

Right now I am sitting back and thinking what should be my next moves. Afterall I live on this earth and dream about the stars!!

Update: AWA 5.0

Well... overall I feel I could see more errors in the SC part and found only the RC and CR parts more challenging.

There were 4 RCS, none of the RCs had the line numbers given, each RC was progressively longer and the last one was the longest! I tried to keep my pacing on track with the 67-58-49-40-31-21-12-3 formula but I guess I have lost on accuracy because of it. The result speaks! I have got a 40V on an MGMAT about a week back(4-5 repeat questions).

Do keep in mind the new introductions in OG-12.
Although I did not get the boldface I did get a couple of "which of the following logically completes the argument "
which I was not that comfortable with(primarily I did not get too many practice questions of such type).

I also felt that the math section was more algebraically inclined, very little geometry, but I am not sure whether each of you can pick this up like a pattern.

Good Score! Are you planning a re-take now?
Being defeated is often only a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.

Congratulations! I don't think the GMAT beat you. Rather it is you who beat the GMAT. You should be proud to get to that score in the first attempt. You are within the reach of top schools if you put some extra effort in apps.

Hi Arora..

Firstly A Big Congrats on the score ...

Was just going through the comments posted above. So did you find the CR more challenging than in OG 12th edition .. How about SC and RC ?
Your thoughts on CR much appreciated because my correct answer rate in CR is terrible.. Need some advice

Congrats dude! If you think it is bad score (I personally don't think so!!!), then you only have two choices:

1) Take a second go at GMAT.
Pros: You may get a better score.
Cons: 1) You may not see major improvements
2) You might miss the deadlines for round 2.
3) Even if you manage to get a good score 700+, before the deadlines of R2 applications and some R1 apps, you will have hurry on the applications and tons of essays recoo etc.

2) Take a step back and repeat after me ... I am better than MOST and 670 is a GREAT score.
Pros: 1) You can apply in R1 in most of the colleges.
2) Devote extra foucs on apps.
3) Research schools.
Cons: 1) Low chances if you are looking to apply to top 5 colleges Stan, Harvard etc.
2) May have to struggle if you want scholarship.

So cheer up!!! Have a beer and party. You are through with the gruesome phase of Will I or Will I not get a good score. Save your breath. you will need it for writing sound essays :-).

If you don't trust me . Look around!! Most of the people who report their scores are 700+, it does not means that every one here gets 700+, there are many (MOST) who do not even hit 600 or even 650. They do not report on this forum.

Arora bhai..congrats ;-) 670 is good score in first attempt..It seems Verbal, in general, is getting tougher day by day due to test saturation.
dinesh has summarized some nice points here..
I am on a break !!

@beatthegmatinsept Yes a retake would be on the cards... but only when I know I am there...

@indiantiger thanks dude...

@papgust hey thanks....Well I will start with my apps... but I guess with such a low score.. I dont want to show that I am a horse with limp in one leg...Good exp, acads and trackrecord would demad a better score. An IT background will not help!! Aneways...
btw I should have attempted all the 300 CR and 300 Math questions you had prepared... Cool stuff... :)

@robby90210 thanks for pumping me up!! Its so nice to be on this community!!

@kvcpk thanks praveen.

@outreach Amar, talk to u soon... rite now..m at my lowest low.. just recollecting myself. Wish u all the best for ur exam...

@debmalya_dutta well.. the OG-12 ( 2,4,7,9 series the new one...) is tougher... I guess... I perhaps wasn't prepared enough that I had many questions where I had a tie between 2 answers... SC was manageable.. RCs were my nemesis...be prepared for quick reading & comprehending...

@dinesh19aug thanks... :) I wish the adcoms too feel so... :) and overall 84 percentile does not make me feel confident, I hope u get...when i say.. i would like to reach for the stars... :) yes... its time to run for a marathon now...with multiple things to be focussed on...btw nice bloug u have put up...Best of luck dude!

@sumanr84 Hey suman... its nothing like that... Hardik was with me at the test center and he cracked it! Its the kind of pressure cooker situation one is ready for the real test... he gave 18 timed tests... and his preparation was much more meticulous... Lets decide to kill the test mercilessly!!
