How to Narrow Down on Programs

by asamanta » Wed Aug 13, 2008 11:52 am
Hi,

I have been doing some research on the top MBA programs and have found that all schools want different kind of essays; which means if I apply to even 5 schools I will have to write atleast 20 essays.

How does one narrow down the process ?

Also how do applicants narrow down on the programs ?

I am looking at colleges that provide an MBA specialization in the Media and Entertainment Industry.

Is there any place I could see which colleges have such a program ?

Hi A,

Unfortunately the MBA application process is tough and many argue its the hardest part of your entire MBA experience! However, most schools have common themes among their essays, including the classic 'why MBA' essay, examples of leadership, future career goals, ect. Therefore, many applicants start with one application and then tailor their essays toward the school if there is a common theme. For example, in the why MBA essay - your answer is the same for most schools, but school-specific information would be different.

Many top MBA schools have strong M&E programs - with classes, clubs, events focused around media. Some of the top schools include Columbia, NYU, Wharton, USC, UCLA.

Good luck!

You should also look into the MBA Media and Entertainment conference (www.mbamec.com) to see which schools have a strong presence there.

From the website: The MBA MEC was founded and continues to be organized by five top business schools - Columbia Business School, Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, MIT's Sloan School of Management, NYU's Stern School of Business, and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Attendees of the conference are drawn from both the founding schools and twenty-seven other participating business schools from around the world.
