Hi Gmat_mission,
We're asked which of the following fractions expressed in the form P/Q is most nearly approximated by the decimal PQ, where P in the tenths' digit and Q is the hundredths' digit. This question can be solved with some 'brute force' arithmetic. We're asked to find the answer that most closely matches the decimal 'conversion' that's described.
Answer A: 1/8
1/8 = .125 vs .18
Answer B: 2/9
2/9 = .222 vs .29
Answer C: 3/4
3/4 = .75 vs .34
Answer D: 4/5
4/5 = .8 vs .45
Answer E: 8/9
8/9 = .888 vs .89
Comparing the respective 'pairs' of decimals, one answer stands out as having two numbers that are an approximation of one another...
Final Answer: E

P/Q ≈ 0.PQGmat_mission wrote:Which of the following fractions expressed in the form P/Q is most nearly approximated by the decimal PQ, where P in the tenths' digit and Q is the hundredths' digit?
A. 1/8
B. 2/9
C. 3/4
D. 4/5
E. 8/9
P/Q ≈ (PQ)/100
100P ≈ Q * PQ
The correct value for P/Q must satisfy the approximation in blue.
A: 100*1 ≈ 8*18
B: 100*2 ≈ 9*29
C. 100*3 ≈ 4*34
D. 4*100 ≈ 5*45
E: 8*100 ≈ 9*89
Only E yields a valid approximation.
The correct answer is E.

Analyzing our answers, we have:
A) 1/8 = 0.125 and 0.18
B) 2/9 = 0.222... and 0.29
C) 3/4 = 0.75 and 0.34
D) 4/5 = 0.8 and 0.45
E) 8/9 = 0.888... and 0.89
Since 0.88 and 0.89 are closest to each other, the answer is E.
