766. The human growth hormone, made by the pituitary gland, is secreted during sleep in higher concentrations than when awake.
(A) during sleep in higher concentrations than when awake
(B) when sleeping in higher concentrations than waking hours
(C) in higher concentrations during sleeping than waking
(D) in higher concentrations during sleep than during waking hours
(E) in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake

A and B are out due to the location of the words in higher concentration. words modifying HGH should be immediately after the clause HGH is secreted.

C is out because the words sleeping and waking are not making the meaning clear. What is sleeping? The pituitary gland?

I was stuck between D and E. I went for E because I thought there was a parallelism problem with D

during sleep than during waking hours
I was a little surprised to see that D was the OA. What is wrong with E?
(A) during sleep in higher concentrations than when awake - "In higher conc." should come before the comparison starts. This sentence has a prob with parallelism. Even ambiguity is a issue here. "When awake" suggests that the pituitary gland is awake.
(B) when sleeping in higher concentrations than waking hours - Ambiguity. "When sleeping in higher concentration" sentence is nonsensical.
(C) in higher concentrations during sleeping than waking - Gerund is not required here.
(D) in higher concentrations during sleep than during waking hours - This corrects the issue of parallelism by bringing "higher conc" before the comparison. Also, waking hours correctly implies that during those hours it is in higher conc. So this removes the ambiguity.
(E) in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake - Ambiguity. This implies that the gland is asleep or awake.

Option "D" looks very awkward.. especially waking hours !!!

I feel E is correct..

If the sentence becomes like this:
The human growth hormone, made by the pituitary gland, is secreted in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake

Does it not mean that the gland is awake or asleep :D How can a gland sleep or be awake

I too think that E could be the correct answer.

I dont really see how "The human growth hormone, made by the pituitary gland, is secreted in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake" is stating that the pituitary gland is asleep. The pituitary gland is where the human growth hormone is made, its a modifier.

Take it out of the sentence and we get: "The human growth hormone is secreted in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake."

I dont see anything wrong with that? Am I missing something?

Parrallelism in D seems off.

(E) in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake
reverse and see if it still makes sense:

d) During sleep, the hormone... is secreted
vs
e) When asleep, the hormone is... secreted

d indicates a period, and is unassociated with the subject "hormone"
e indicates a state, which implies the subject is in that state, in this case the hormone (or the gland)

Even in your modified version, it shows that hormone is asleep or hormone is awake!!! That is not logical. Is it? Hormones don't sleep or wake up :D

I disagree, 'is secreted' is a verb modifier and it does not need to touch human growth hormone.

Plus, if what you were implying was correct, then the problem is not that the gland is awake or asleep, but rather the gland is BEING secreted, rather than HGH secreting from the gland.

D is definitely correct.

Ritesh gave a good account as to why.
