Studies show that young people with higher-than-average blood pressure and their families have a history of high blood pressure are more likely than others to develop a severe form of the condition.
A.same as above
B.whose families have a history of high blood pressure
C.and a history of high blood pressure runs in the family
D.whose families have a history of high blood pressure running in them
E.with a history of high blood pressure running in their family

OA: B

I was left with choice B and C. I eliminated B, because I thought that the construction, "studies show that young people with X whose Y " is wrong. shouldn't there be an "and" preceding "whose", as in, " ...people with X and whose families...." .

In choice B, whose immediately follows blood pressure. so, I feel that whose wrongly modifies blood pressure, indicating that it is the blood pressure whose families have a history.

Kindly let me know the correct explanation.

Thanx

(C) does not seem to be correct. in (C) "runs" has been used as a noun, which is perhaps rarely used. it would have been much better without the word "runs".

But i can't understand why (E) is wrong. i would eliminate (B) for the same reason as jaymin would. (E) does not sound good, as "blood pressure" would be used twice in the sentence. but (B) also has the same problem. (E) has a clear referent for the pronoun.

In fact, i don't find any of the options totally acceptable  still if forced, I would have picked (E) in stead. can anyone please help???

Whose

by krishnakumarhod » Tue Feb 17, 2009 11:18 pm
According to what i understand from manhattan SC .Whose can be used only to refer to living whereas others here can modify blood pressues.

Still am confused why C does not work out here.
Probably Awkward construction??

Please correct me if i am wrong

You can grammatically say that their families have a history of high blood pressure, or that high blood pressure runs in the family, but if you say "a history of high blood pressure runs in the family" (C) or "with a history of high blood pressure running in their family" (E), you are saying the same thing twice.
