I think it is B. The parallelism works here...

Can't be B. 'it' can't be used here.

As regards C, I think them does not have a proper antecedent.

Do it is always wrong in GMAT
On the Great Plains, nineteenth-century settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, doing it without timber and nails.
(A) settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, doing it without
(B) settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, did it without
(C) settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, making them while not having bold part has wordy construction
(D) settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, making do without
(E) settlers’ homes were built of mud and grass, making do without
Possessive poison subject is "settler" who built their homes and not their homes

Hope this Helps

A&B Wrong -- "it" doesn't agree with plural "homes"
C Wrong -- "making them while not having", here 'them" refers to settlers (we are making houses not settlers).
D -- Correct
E Wrong-- Here subject is "Homes". Homes making ... doesn't make sense

The correct idiom is "make do with/without".

D and E fit the bill. E is incorrect coz settlers should be the subject as they built the homes.

Hi Karan,

Do it is not wrong in GMAT...."do it" is only wrong when "it" tries to replace a verb/action..when "it" replaces noun...then it is perfectly ok to use the same...

Manhattan gives an example to illustrate this too...

"This is your assignment. You should do it by tommorow evening"

Here "it" is clearing refering to assignment....

On the Great Plains, nineteenth-century settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, doing it without timber and nails.
(A) settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, doing it without

Here it is testing for pronoun reference error. Here the reference is made for "build their homes" which is plural. So "it" cant be used

(B) settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, did it without

Same as A

(C) settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, making them while not having

(D) settlers used mud and grass to build their homes, making do without
(E) settlers’ homes were built of mud and grass, making do without

making - do is redundant so D&E out[/b]
