Usage of That - MGMAT

by vineetbatra » Mon Aug 17, 2009 7:24 pm
Sentence reads - The rapid development of India in the 2oth centruy is like England in the 18th Century.

I understand that we have a wrong comparison.

The correct sentence is
Sentence reads - The rapid development of India in the 2oth centruy is like that of England in the 18th Century.

My question - when do I use "like development of" instead of writing "Like That of". When do I use the actual noun itself instead of "That"

I am really confused.

as far as i know it is upto the user to use that or the noun itself but the rule book says the sentence has to be concise .

The rapid development of India in the 2oth centruy is like the rapid development of OR that of England in the 18th Century.

red will always penalise u in GMAT.

if one has to chose between two gramatically correct sentence , then the one has to decide which of the two is more concise

Thanks for the response, but my question is when is "that" needed in a clause, what is the trigger that tells me that I can use "that"

Let me give you another example

Q 53 In a 5-to-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that two upstate New York counties owed restitution to three tribes of Oneida Indians for the unlawful seizure of their ancestral lands in the eighteenth century.
(A) that two upstate New York counties owed restitution to three tribes of 0neida Indians for the unlawful seizure of
(B) that two upstate New York counties owed restitution to three tribes of Oneida Indians because of their unlawful seizure of

the explanation says usage of "that" before two upstate is necessary, otherwise sentence is ambiguous.

the feature compared here is the rapid development and not the country in itself.. so like england makes a comparision between development and country which is odd..so like that of refers to the proper usage of pronoun that as demonstrative pronoun.
