Got Beaten! Won't Quit !!!

by akshatgupta87 » Fri Apr 29, 2011 10:09 am
Hi,

I gave GMAT today. Extremely frustrated...
Got 600( Q:49, V:22)
My lowest score till date... :( :(
Was expecting around 680...
Various test score results:
Knewton: 700 (Q:50, V:34)
MGMAT 1: 680 (Q:48, V:34)
MGMAT 2: 680 (Q:47, V:35)
MGMAT 3: 680 (Q:49, V:34)
MGMAT 4: 590 (Q:47, V:25)
MGMAT 5: 660 (Q:50, V:32)
MGMAT 6: 650 (Q:50, V:31)
GMAT Prep1: 640 (Q:47, V:29)
GMAT Prep2:640 (Q:50, V:25)

Material covered for Verbal:

1) OG 12
2) Verbal 2nd review
3) SC MGMAT Guide
4) Kaplan Comprehensive
5) Spidey's SC Notes

Material Covered for Quant:
1) OG 12
2) Quant 2nd review
3) Kaplan Comprehensive
4) Kaplan 800
5) MGMAT Complete Set

Although I'm satisfied with my Quant score, just a little bit of improvement will land me in the 50 range.
Thinking of doing 700+ level questions.

Can someone suggest me what can be done for verbal as I'm totally clueless & confused...
Please help me as I'm planning to take my 2nd attempt after 3 months..
Any extra material for verbal and strategy which could be used?

Thanks in Advance,
~Akshat

Well, dont panic.

About your verbal,
get some more SC practice. Go over OG again. Learn somethign from each problem. A lot of people on this forum say that OG is like a bible.

How about getting yourself the powerscore CR bible?

And maybe more practice for RC as well.

All d best.

(Just to let you know that this is the wrong forum, incase you think you havent beaten the GMAT yet. :))
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)

Hi Vineesh...

Thanks for the reply...
1) I'm thinking of doing RC 99 for reading comprehension( i had problems in tackling the passages)
thinking of doing the strategy from Manhattan and then doing RC99 for practice..What is your say on this?
~ Earlier during my preparation days, I tried some strategies like creating the GIST but didn't work for me, so decided to read the passage and forget about strategies. But again this didn't work well on the main day...

2) well what do you say about CR- CR powerscore or CR1000 or both ... considering the time i have(3months), what is your say on this?

3) SC- I think i will look at the basic concepts once again..will do more practice for them...

Again thanks for your reply... :)

Actually I missed mentioning RC99. That is what I was getting at. I dunno how to say what will work or not cos I am still working on CR and not yet gone into the depths of RC. But the important thing is to identify a strategy, work on all OG problems and see that your strategy is working.

CR Powerscore is simply great. It gives us a method of working on CR. I dont really know what I learnt from the book, but can tell you that I feel more confident with CR now. DOnt expect actual Biblical stories from it. IT is just a strategic way of approaching CR questions. (Dunno about CR1000)

SC, we already discussed. Yes, read that MGMAT SC like 5 times. :)

(If I helped you, let me know with the thank button so I can look back at my post with pride :D)

Hi:
Don't despair. Your Quant is really good. A bit of practice on verbal and you are set. BTW out of the 3 Q types in Verbal - (SC, RC, CR), which one are you weakest in? I ask because my recommendation would be to master the other two and spend time on the weakest one to get 'better'. Unless you have time to master all 3 :-)

You got the attitude, follow books mentioned by Vineesh and I think you are there.

God speed...

Hi thebigkats

In verbal, I kinda mess up in the RC's.
As I posted earlier, I don't have any strategy on how to tackle RC passages and in the main deal, I got lost while reading some huge passages. Can you tell me what can I do for this? Any strategy that was useful for you? Any tips?

Also, for quant, can you suggest me some material that caters to those 700+ level questions.

Thanks :)

Hi:
I will PM you the RC technique that worked for me (may or may not work for you).
As for quant - of course OG is a good resource. Other than that,I could not find much - Kaplan problems were ok and BTG has very limited questions (and they repeat constantly).

I suggest that you try MGMAT, I have read good things about it.

regards,
mukesh
