Good OG question

by vish150783 » Fri Dec 05, 2008 7:28 pm
Of the five coordinates associated with points A, B, C, D, E on the number line which has the greatest absolute value?

---------A--------B------C------D------E-------------
<--------(-2)----(-1)----(0)----(1)-----(2)-------->

(a) A
(b) B
(c) C
(d) D
(e) E

I want to understand the concept.. could not quite grasp it from OG.

Hi,

Greatest value is defined as the distance from the origin, hence the value of |-2| = |2|. Similarly |-2|>|1|.. hope u can use this concept to answer the question.

But isnt |2| = |-2| = same?

So how do you know if 2 is right or -2 right? because the absolute values of these two values are same.

Are you referring to question 20 on page 154 of OG 11?

yes, looks like that's the one.

Can someone explain this? Why is -2 any further from the origini than 2?
