The success of the program to eradicate smallpox has stimulated experts to pursue what they had not previously considered possible - better control, if not eradication, of the other infections such as measles and yaws.

A.
B. what they had not previously considered a possibility - better control, if not eradication, of the other infections like.
C. something they had not previously considered possible - better control, if not eradication, of such infections as.
D. something not considered a previous possibility - better control and perhaps eradication, of other infections such as
E. the possibility of what they had not previously considered - better control and possibly eradication of infections like

OK the OA is C. I selected A, can anyone please tell me why this is wrong? Thanks

B/E - usage of like to indicate examples is wrong
A - 'the other infections' is wrong. 'the' is a definite article, which is used before nouns which are very specific. Understand the context here, we are indicating examples and there can be many but we are mentioning only few. The usage of 'the' other infections is wrong as it seems to mention that these are only examples and there are no more. In short 'the other infections' construction is wrong and do not club it with 'such as'
D - 'not considered a previous possibility' - awkward

IMO C.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

So the only problem with A is the usage of the?

I found this explanation pointing out the other error as well.
