I'm not sure if I understand why the answer is |x|/x. Is it simply to cover both the positive and the negative bases?
In other words, is |x|/x essentially the same as +/- 1?

well you are right sqr rt (x ^ 2) = |x| or in other words -x when x <0 and x when x > 0. which leads to +1 or -1 for your answer
