Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors.
(A) merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors
(B) merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors
(C) merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do
(D) and merges the nuclei of atoms but does not split them apart, as is done in unclear reactors
(E) and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic reactors that split them apart
Please let me know the answer and explaination.

E...A,B and C violate the principles of parallelism...amongst D & E I would go with E

i think it should be C
how can u parallel the sun , the star and bombs to merging.....
Besides the list has ended as indicated by and Hydrogen bombs . So the last part is talking about nuclear fusion

I agree. The answer has to be C.Umar82 wrote:This is an OFFICIAL Question from the Orange GMAT Book, and the OE is C.
Leo, please do not post fake answers!
There is a list but the other "and" - what is its function? It doesn't have a function.
Is incorrect. The latter portion is subordinate to the former portion."the parallelism in E is in between
powers the Sun(, the stars, and hydrogen bombs) and merges the nuclei....
i hope this helps"
The rather than is the preferred idiom.
