I would go with C.

E...A,B and C violate the principles of parallelism...amongst D & E I would go with E

i think it should be C
how can u parallel the sun , the star and bombs to merging.....
Besides the list has ended as indicated by and Hydrogen bombs . So the last part is talking about nuclear fusion

I agree. The answer has to be C.

There is a list but the other "and" - what is its function? It doesn't have a function.

Is incorrect. The latter portion is subordinate to the former portion.

The rather than is the preferred idiom.
