In city, the car averages 25 mpg or 1/25 gallon per mile.
On highway, the car averages 40 mpg or 1/40 gallon per mile.

In city, the car is driven 10 miles. So, gallons of gasoline used = 10 * 1/25 = 2/5 gallons
On highway, the car is driven 50 miles. So, gallons of gasoline used = 50 * 1/40 = 5/4 gallons

Total distance = 10 + 50 = 60 miles
Total gallons of gasoline used = 2/5 + 5/4 = (8 + 25)/20 = 33/20 gallons

Therefore, the car averages = 60 / (33/20) = 60 * 20/33 = 400/11, which is closest to 36 mpg.

The correct answer is D.
