gmat apps vs books/study material??

by rahulzlpr » Thu Jan 21, 2016 6:35 am
Hi All,

I am planning to prepare for GMAT in a few months time while researching for the best study approach I came across both the self study approach via books like Manhattan etc.
As well as GMAT apps for iPad/iPhone some of which are free. So do these apps suffice and provide a solid preparation for GMAT compared to the test prep books and OG?? Kindly advise

Our free app allows access to all of our lessons, so I'm biased, but yes, this should suffice: https://www.veritasprep.com/gmat-iphone-apps/

Hi rahulzlpr,

There are a variety of different ways that you can study for the GMAT and lots of different resources that you can use over the course of your studies. Until we define your particular strengths and weaknesses and determine how YOU best study, there's no way to say whether any of those resources will have a big impact on how you perform.

1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

The ideal set of material that one should finish is here

and I totally disagree that only one material suffice. Every material has some positive points but at the same time they have some negative points as well. So to gather good experience of GMAT like problems, you need to refer to more than one set of Material

Ignoring Official sources of Questions is the Biggest mistake that one can make in GMAT Preparation

Ideally I would suggest
1) MGMAT books - For both Quant and Verbal
2) Kaplan 800- For Quant only
3) OG 10- For Verbal only
4) OG 16- For Quant and Verbal Both
5) GMATCLUB test series (Please keep in mind that it's harder than Actual GMAT)
6) MGMAT Test series (Please keep in mind that it's harder than Actual GMAT)
7) GMAT PREP Tests (Most authentic and close replica of GMAT test however students tend to get a little difficult actual GMAT than these tests so your score this shows may be the upper limit of your expected score)
8) Quant Review and Verbal Review

Do NOT use apps to study for the GMAT. They will not suffice. If you're spending 10-15 minutes on a GMAT app while waiting for the bus, in between classes, etc. then that's great, but your actual serious study time needs to be spent with official material and high-quality practice tests, using books and your computer.

These are the mandatory books for any serious GMAT test-taker, in my opinion:

"¢ The Official Guide for GMAT Review (2015 edition): https://amzn.to/1HCICKb
"¢ The Official Guide for GMAT Review (2016 edition): https://amzn.to/1Gox0qq

Since approx. 25% of the questions in the GMAT OG16 are NEW. I recommend you study with the 2013 or 2015 edition FIRST (they are identical), then purchase the 2016 edition and do the new questions and REDO the old questions as a "test" to make sure you really understood them the 1st time around.

"¢ Manhattan GMAT Fractions, Decimals, & Percents: https://amzn.to/1JIl2JB
"¢ Manhattan GMAT Algebra: https://amzn.to/1HBGKzr
"¢ Manhattan GMAT Word Problems: https://amzn.to/1KBzkNz
"¢ Manhattan GMAT Geometry: https://amzn.to/1GUHaNJ
"¢ Manhattan GMAT Number Properties: https://amzn.to/1KBA1Xd
"¢ Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction Guide: https://amzn.to/1KBA6KD
"¢ PowerScore Critical Reasoning Bible: https://amzn.to/1HCJe2p

You don't really need an RC book as there are plenty of passages online to practice, but you WILL need to develop a solid strategy to reading the passages and dealing with the answer choices.

Also, I didn't include the Verbal and Quant Review books from GMAC. Most test-takers don't even make it all the way through the Official Guide, so I wouldn't bother getting them until you really need them. These books will keep you busy for awhile. :-)

Best,
Vivian
