GMAT 750 , Q50 V41 Bangalore India

by tanarora » Sat Jun 14, 2014 9:39 am
I gave my gmat on May 19th and scored a 750. Just wanted to share my experience but have been busy with work for a while.

I started my prep in Mid-jan and joined CrackVerbal ( CV ) here in Bangalore. I gave the first gmat prep exam at the CV center as a diagnostic test and got a 690. I gave a couple of other tests in the first 2-3 weeks of my prep and scored 670 - 680. The mistakes I was making were very clear. In each of the exams , SC and DS were the problem.

While going through the verbal classes , I was doing whatever was done in classes plus the OG and verbal review. Once I was done with the classes , I wanted to concentrate more on SC . So , i spent around 10 days just doing SC regularly. Went through the rules again and again. The verbal classes at CV helped me a lot.

Then I started with the Quant classes. The classes were wonderful and by the time I was done with the classes , I was quite confident with my quant. In this time , I had done the gmat math bible , the class work and the OG/ Quant Review.

Now after the classes were done , SC was still my major concern . I started to do the advanced docs provided by CV. But I had been studying regularly for quite some time ( 3 months ) and had started to get very very Bored.

So instead of concentrating too much on the advanced docs , I started to give tests. I would analyse my mistakes in each exam that I gave. I gave all the free exams available. Gave a couple of the Manhattan Paid ones. Then I gave the 4 gmat prep exams. The last 7-8 exams , I scored above 700.

Now , I was getting good scores but hadn't actually gone through the advanced docs ( only 20% maybe ). I had gotten too bored to go through them ( too many questions ! )
I booked the exam keeping 1 week in hand.
On the exam day , I was a little nervous initially . But once I started with the AWA , I became very comfortable. I had given too many practice exams and this felt like one of the exams that I had given at the CV centre( the experience of giving exams in their lab was very similar to the actual exam). I was completely in my comfort zone.

I found the difficulty level very close to the gmat prep exams. CR i felt was relatively easy.

To sum it all up , my advice would be to take out some time everyday. And keep giving the practice tests. In my 4 months of prep , I gave around 15-16 tests. That's around one test every week. It really helped me.
For people looking for a coaching institute in Bangalore , I would strongly recommend CV. The teachers are really good and the support system is wonderful.

Hi Veeram,

By "examS" are you referring to the official FREE GMATPrep practice tests?
If so, you can download them here: https://www.mba.com/the-gmat/download-fr ... tware.aspx

Sorry to say but in your experience you have mentioned about only CV classes. How, Why, What and Where - CV classes.

No one would gain anything from your story.

Please tell us something about your experience, which helped you to score 750.
What was your prep strategy?
How you prepared for Quant and Verbal?
How you approached different sections such as PS, DS, SC, CR and RC?
What were your weak areas, and how you tackled it? etc...

Above questions will help future gmat takers to adapt some good strategies and analyze their weak areas.

Hi Tanuj,

That is a great score! Glad I was able to help.

What is more important is the hardwork you put in. Being diligent with your prep is an underrated quality. Your consistency in prep really paid off! :)

Doesn't it look like one of the fake review stories?

Hi Veeram ,

The tests I mentioned were the GmatPrep free tests and also many other free tests like Manhattan, Princeton , Economist Gmat , veritas etc. All these offer 1 free test that you can give online anywhere you want..I used to give it at the coaching center that I had joined cz at home there is definitely some disturbance or the other..

Hi Chetan ,

Sorry for not going into details earlier.
I started out my prep in mid jan as mentioned earlier.
Luckily i was not too overloaded at work so I was able to take out time everyday. I generally sleep late so I took out time post dinner to study. I used to start at 10 and study still 1 oclock 4-5 days a week.
On the weekend , I would give a practice exam either on saturday or sunday.
I cannot stress more on this point. Giving a test every week really really helped me .

I'll start with Verbal . I was good at CR so didnt bother with too much rules . Coming to RC , I knew nothing as such would help me prep apart from doing as many passages as I can..I would start the my study everyday with 3-4 timed RC passages. Over time a saw a considerable improvement.

SC was my biggest concern. As I have mentioned before , I spend more than 10 days just doing SC. I went though the rules a couple of times. Didnt really care about idioms. I focussed more on sva , modifiers..
I used to analyse each and every SC question that I did. I used to Search explanations online at different forums for the questions I got wrong. In my entire prep , I have spent around 40% of my time only on SC.

Coming to quant , I was very good at PS. Using the options in a lot of questions , I was able to either eliminate options or reach at the answer. But cz of this , I was not in the habit of forming equations and it was affecting DS cz i would miss a scenario somewhere.
I started practicing more DS questions and would form equations for every question. Over time I got better but it was still a problem till the day of the exam.

I am not sure of what else to write. Let me know if you have any more questions.
To sum up , I would like to say Be Consistent with your prep. Take out some time everyday. Over time the score improves.

Dear Tanuj.

You really got a very good score. Congrats!!

My name is Roopa and am based out of Hyderabad. I last worked with a large Aerospace company at Hyd in the HR as a Deputy Manager till the last year. I am not working now.

I am keen to give GMAT exam in August'14. In fact, I wanted to join CV, but since there is no centre at Hyd - I was not too keen to take the course online.

I started preparing since mid April of this year and so started talking coaching with an Institute here. My Verbal is better than the Quant. But timing is a major issue in both the sections

My queries are:
1. How to improve my Quant score - my weak area?
2. How to prepare for Advanced Maths?
3. IR is a major challenge. How to crack this?
4. My hitch is till date - just out of fear / hesitation I have not taken a single mock test. Should I start giving those tests now?

Hi Roopa,

Regardless of how you continue to prepare for the GMAT, you MUST take practice CATs at regular intervals. The scores from those CATs play an important role in helping you to adjust your studies, and improve on endurance and pacing. Your first practice CAT probably won't be a strong performance (most people screw up their first few CATs), but that's okay. You'll learn from the process and gain valuable information about what areas you should work on before you take your next CAT.

Hi Roopa ,

For Quant , look at the manhattan advanced gmat quant after doing the OG and Quant Review.
Towards the end , it has 15 workout sets of 10 questions each. These in my opinion are quite above the gmat level but it does help you become comfortable with quant.

Dont worry about IR. Just give complete practice tests. While giving these tests , do the AWA and IR sections as well...Start giving tests NOW and give as many as you can.
The first 2-3 tests will tell you exactly what your weak sections are . Then devote more of your time on these sections..
Also , the best way to improve your timing is giving these tests..Dont be scared ..just analyse your mistakes and focus on the weak areas..the scores improve over time and that gives you confidence that you're heading in the right direction!
Let me know if I can help you with anything else !

How is your job designation/description relevant to GMAT ?
My guess is you have been working for a while and are out of study mode. One needs to approach GMAT as a diligent student and you may want to forget your work accomplishments for a while. Enough Gyan!!!

Give a mock ASAP preferably GMAT Prep from MBA.com. Whether you would be able to write GMAT in August will only depend on the difference between your current and target score. Don't assume your quant is weak and your verbal is strong. Unless you have given a mock under timed condition it's difficult to come to that conclusion.

Don't worry about IR for now, it should be least of your concerns. Just give a Mock without IR/AWA.
Then come and post your results. Probably then many resident experts on this forum might be able to help you.
