Help sought !!

by kiran.raze » Wed Oct 01, 2008 4:45 am
Hi guys,

I had a query. I just gave my Gmat and scored a 710 (q 50,v 35). Although I plan to re-take the test as I feel i could have scored much better. Now my query is this : - How good are the chances at the ivy league (top 10) with a score of 710 and profile as follows:

I am planning to apply next year so by then:

Total Experience: 3.3 yrs experience

Business Consulting
: 2 years of experience in business / strategy consulting in the telecom sector (IBM business consulting services)

Startup: 1.3 yrs experience in a telecom start up for the past 1.3 yrs as a senior manager for business development & client services(account management)

Academics:

Post grad diploma in telcom mgmt from a reputed institute in India(top 5% of the class)

B-tech in computer science from a decent univ in India (approx 70%)

I have had an great run at my company and a distinguished professional career ever since.

This would let me plan about what kind of scores might help me in stregthening my application. As I am already aware that of course the Gmat score is just a part of the entire application process.Kindly help !

Dear Kiran,

Ivy League admissions will be extremely tough this year as applications are expected to increase. Regardless, it is always tougher for international applicants than domestic applicants at these programs. You will be put into the large subset of applicants from India and have to find a way to distinguish yourself from this group. A large percentage of this subset have GMATs greater than 700, graduated first class/first class with distinction, and work in the IT sector.

You need to identify what in your background makes you unique in a positive way. It is also important to have interesting recent community activities, especially where you have been a leader, to discuss in your essays. Finally, I strongly encourage you to retake your GMAT and increase your score. If you can get in to the 750+ range, it will help you to stand out a little bit more.

My last bit of advice: there are fabulous, strong MBA programs outside of the Ivy League. Many of these schools would welcome your application and 710 GMAT. I think it would be beneficial to apply to a few schools outside the top 20 to ensure you will be in business school next year. You never know--you might find one of these schools to be a perfect fit.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Thank you for responding. Well I guess I ll have to retake my GMAT then. But just another point, which I feel you have confused with is :

My profile is not an IT profile, I have been working in the business process improvement & strategy consulting practice as a senior consultant for IBM business consulting services for telecom companies

Does that qualify for an 'IT' profile ?

just wanted to clarify !

cheers

Hi Kiran,

My error--yes, your consulting role is a little different. I apologize. You definitely want to leverage that to your advantage and highlight the client management/project management aspect of your role.

Good luck,
Lisa
