fortune-seeking adventurers -- are the object of the sentence.
'Who'
is a better choice.

As Ron says "Tense related SCs are based 100% on meaning" , here is my attempt.
|-----------Past Perfect----------------|---------------------Past------------------|------Present-----
(adventurers had prospered ---------|---(gold discovered in ------|
in previous gold rushes)---------------|---1886 could not mined)--|
E) who had prospered --only answer that satisfies the meaning + who is the relative pronoun for adventurers

If fortune seeking adventurers are object then whom is the right usage. Correct me if i am wrong. Even i was confused between A/E only but chose A as the adventurers are objects.saketk wrote: fortune-seeking adventurers -- are the object of the sentence.
'Who'
is a better choice.

"Who" should be the correct relative pronoun.
"Whom" would be correct if the sentence had been something like "fortune seeking adventurers whom we had seen".
