Reconsidering a US MBA

by bm2012 » Mon Jul 02, 2012 2:47 pm
I have been eager to apply to top business schools in the US for over a year. However, while I took a step back and delved deeper into business school profiles, a question has been tinkering which has brought in some doubt with respect to pursuing a MBA in the US. Would an MBA, except from H/S/W, add value if one were to do business in a Asian country? Would it be advised to pursue a MBA from an Asian country if future career aspirations centered across the region?

Well, keep in mind that the US B-schools have been around for a loong time, and carry a lot of prestige even in Asia. In China, we see folks raging for an M7 MBA. And they come back and they move up as expected, so just because its in the US doesn't mean you cant move back to Asia and build a VERY successful career. Of course it would be a good idea to focus on programs which have a bit more strength or connections with Asia, and to look at European and Asian programs as well. No need to ONLY apply to US or ONLY Asian programs. Apply anywhere that will get you to your goals!

Hi bm2012, like Jon said, there's a general positive perception of US MBA programs, after all, the MBA designation did originate in the US, and the country's home to the world's top b-schools. My personal advice to you would be to study in a reputable Asian B-School, if you have plans to work in Asia, this is a logical choice - physically being in an Asian country would allow you to experience the life and culture in the region in a more intimate fashion. Studying in an Asian B-School would also naturally expose you to many more opportunities and jobs that are within the region - even if the companies are international, your education in an MBA program tailored for business in Asia would make you much more suitable for job posts within the region.

I study and work in Singapore, this country is one of the best Asian cities to get an education in. There are 3 local universities you can consider if you decide to take up your MBA here, they are - NUS, NTU, and SMU. These are the programs that I feel would be most relevant to you -

NUS MBA

NUS PKU MBA

Spend some time researching specific programs that you are interested in, and you may be surprised to see their global footprint. For instance, there is a significant number of Dartmouth Tuck alumni working in Japan. Attending a US b-school outside of H/S/W can definitely still add value to a career in Asia.

You may also want to look at MBA alumni at firms/industries that you are looking to work in. For example, the management consulting firms here in Thailand have a lot more Kellogg and Wharton graduates vs. Booth and Stern, so if I want to work in the industry here, I'd be better off looking at K/W vs. B/S.

While there are a lot of good programs in Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong etc.), top US MBAs still hold a lot of value in Asian countries.

Good luck!
