Feedback on Additional Maths Courses

by freespirit_6984 » Thu Jul 02, 2009 3:06 am
I graduated from the top engineering college in India and have decent grades in all my Maths courses. I also scored 50 in the quant section of the GMAT. My concern is I had to retake one maths course at college (though I finally completed it with an A)

In this light, I wanted to enroll at mbamath.com and complete their online course and wanted feedback on how the top 10 schools view this program and whether there is a mental picture of "weak quant" the minute they see this on the resume, though I might have undertaken the course just to boost my application and not necessarily because of low maths skills.

Hi Freespirit,

In regard to your question about enrolling in MBAmath.com, there are a couple of factors for your to consider. In evaluating the quantitative portion of an apllications, adcoms review not only your GMAT score, but they also review your transcript for a list of all undergrad quantitative coursework and the grades received. It sounds like even though you have a low quant score on the GMAT, you have solid quant grades in undergrad. This will certainly help put the admissions committee's mind at ease when evaluating your application.

I would encourage you to enroll in MBAmath.com or other courses (such as accounting and statistics) if you did not take these courses in your undergraduate studies. By enrolling in these classes you will demonstrate to the adcom that you are serious about obtaining your MBA and are doing your best to prepare for their quantitative curriculum. This will be viewed as a positive for your application.

I hope this helps.

Best,

Stacey

Hi Stacey,

That does help. I want the ad com to know I'm serious about the MBA and want to enroll at MBAmath.com for this reason alone. I have 2 A's and 2 B's in my four math courses in college and a 50 on the quant section in the GMAT but I've never taken a college level statistics course or any finance/accounting/economics classes.

My only concern was whether this would make the adcom think that my quant skills are otherwise weak (which they are not), which you've dispelled.

Thanks again!

Math course in UG - bad GPA

by moonshine » Mon Jul 13, 2009 11:51 am
Hi Stacey,

I have a similar concern, only my UG scores were dismal low. I did my course from a top school in Asia - majored in Mathematics. It was a 3 year course on Mathematical theory and for many reasons I believe I made a mistake choosing it.

At that time, doing well was not so important as I had no use for it - I graduated about 10 years ago anyways. However my work applies a lot of quantitative analysis and I work in a top 5 consulting firm.

I'm now applying for 1 year MBA programs and my GMAT test date is in August. Do you recommend I should take a Math extension course before applying to B-schools?

If so, which is the best and most valued course by adcom? Do i have enough time now? I want to apply in first round.

Thanks a ton!
