Evaluate my profile

by shrnayak » Wed Aug 20, 2008 1:27 am
Last week I took GMAT and scored 500. Considering this low score I am planning to retake the test by october end. But my question is, is there any chances in any of the recommended school with this score.

My profile is:
GMAT : 500
Work exp : 5 years in IT.
International exposure : 9 month in South Korea as a consultant.
Academic : 80%+

Kindly let me know when is the last date for applying to fall 2009 classes(for most of the B school).

Thanks in advance

I am not sure which schools you are referring to as the "recommended schools". Generally, the higher ranked programs require higher GMAT scores. The average score for the Top 50 MBA programs is 660. Obviously, this is higher because it includes the top 10 programs. Therefore, you should focus on strengthening your GMAT score if you are aiming for top tier schools.

Most schools have a final application deadline in mid - late Spring however you need to check with each program for specific dates. Finally, keep in mind that the later application rounds tend to be the most competitive.

Thanks for your input. Yes, I was refering to Top schools. I have some doubt regarding rounds R1, R2 etc... If we consider 2009 academic year, which round starts when? And when is the deadline for applications? As I am planning to take GMAT once again to improve my score, I want to know the application deadlines(in general). I am targeting ISB also. Thanking you in advance.

It will be very difficult to get into a top tier school with a GMAT score of 500. You need to significantly improve your score to be competitive. I would suggest that you re-evaluate your test taking approach and areas of weakness and devise a strategy to improve your score.

Most schools have round 1 deadlines in the October/November timeframe and final deadlines in March/April. As I mentioned earlier, deadlines are school specific therefore you need to check each program for actual dates. For example, ISB only has two application cycles (Sept 15 and Dec 1) while many other schools have three or four cycles.
