EMBA Applicant Profile Evaluation

by Neeo123 » Mon Nov 21, 2016 7:48 am
Hi there,

I am planning to apply for Wharton/Columbia EMBA in 2017. I have ~11 years of experience and currently working as Sr. Manager in big IT Consulting (in Media/Entertainment domain). Most of my clients are fortune 500 companies. Before joining the consulting firm, i was working with animal rights non-profit orgainization for ~2 years.

GMAT - 640, Quant 44, Verbal 35

Academics - MS Computer Science with GPS 3.35
BS computer Science with GPA 3.5

I can get letter of recommendation from my current supervisor and previous employers and I will be taking care of the fees myself.

Extra Curricular- Working as volunteer with local Animal Shelter

I would really appreciate if you can provide your feedback on my profile and anything I can do to improve my chances.

Thanks!

As noted, a stronger GMAT would be an asset for your application, even though EMBA admissions at top business schools don't require the same stratospheric test scores that Columbia and Wharton's full-time programs do. Still, you want to be maximally competitive, so if you can crank up that score in a re-take, it's worth the effort.
A couple of questions: will your company be paying your tuition? If so, that's an asset (not sure if that's what you meant by "I will be paying the fees myself). Also, your community service isn't doing much for you. If you can find a way to expand that into some kind of people-leadership, even spearheading volunteer days that bring your colleagues to these animal shelters one weekend a month, that would show that you have a strong leadership vision.
Ultimately, the question of goals will come up. What is the post-EMBA vision that requires this education? Is it a must-have or a nice-to-have? Making that question work for you will be another key part of the puzzle.

Good luck!
