### DS question from OG Quant Review

by rachita » Wed May 21, 2008 9:17 pm
Hi Everyone!!!

Could you please tell me the answer and explaination for this question????

CANCELATION FEES
Days prior to Departure Percent of Package Price
46 or more 10%
45 – 31 35%
30 – 16 50%
15 – 5 65%
4 or fewer 100%

The table above shows the cancellation fee schedule
that a travel agency uses to determine the fee charged
to a tourist who cancels a trip prior to departure. If a
tourist canceled a trip with a package price of $1,700 and a departure date of September 4, on what day was the trip canceled? (1) The cancellation fee was$595.
(2) If the trip had been canceled one day later, the cancellation fee would have been $255 more. Thanks! However 'C' is ans here. From 1: We can only get the range of days i.e. 45-31. since$ 595 is 35% of $1700.Insufficient From 2: we get$255 is 15% of $1700. It says it would have been 15% more, if it had got cancelled one day later.Still can't decide.Insufficient. Combining the two : we now know that the fees would have been 850. Since from 1 we know the cancellation fee is$595 and from 2 we know one day later it would have been $255 more i.e.$(595+255)=$850 So it was cancelled on 31th day.Hence C is ans. From the stem we know that... 46 or more 10% => 10% of 1700 = 170 45 – 31 35% => 35% of 1700 = 595 30 – 16 50% => 50 % of 1700 = 850 15 – 5 65% => 65% of 1700 = 1105 4 or fewer 100% 100% of 1700 = 1700 From this we see that 225 is simply 850 - 595. So, the trip must have been cancelled ont he transition day betwen the 35% cancellation fee to the 50% cancellation fee. It was cancelled 30 days before the departure. The OA is surely C.

St 1 Alone: Simply the range days i.e 31 - 45.

St 2 Alone: It just gives that if it would have been 1 day later then additional fees of 255 would be charged. It will not give you the exact no. of days or not even the range.

Combined: Will give you the range first and then the actual no. of days.
