determined by VS as a result of

by Mustang » Tue Mar 10, 2009 8:53 pm
Can anyone explain to me the difference in usage of

a) determined by
b) as a result of
c) due to

How do we know when to use one over the other. OG 11, Question 138 of SC is based on this concept. I remember seeing a post on this topic some time back but cannot find it now.

Thanks!

Sorry to be bumping up an old thread:

I think the confusion arises from this particular question from OG. I am providing the right answer (By) versus the wrong one (As a result of)

The direction in which the Earth and the other solid planets --Mercury, Venus, and Mars -- spin was determined [BY/AS A RESULT OF] collisions with giant celestial bodies in the early history of the Solar System.

Determined by means the direction of spin was found out by (observing) the collisions.

Determined as a result of means the direction of spin was found BECAUSE of the collisions.
