Is line 1 is parallel to the y-axis ?.

1)the equation of line 1 is x=4 .

2) the points (4,2) and (4,-5) are on the line 1.

Yes, line 1 is parellel to the y axis because the equation of a line parallel to the y axis will have the equation x = k, where k is any constant.

In this case we have x = 4.

from Stat.1, X=4; Any line with X=Constant will be parallel to Y axis. Sufficient condn.

from Stat.2, X=4 for both the points, hence it will be parallel to Y axis. Sufficient condn.

(1) The equation of line 1 is x = 4 implies line 1 is parallel to y-axis, as x = 4 is a line passing through the point (4, 0), which is parallel to y-axis; SUFFICIENT.

(2) The points (4,2) and (4,-5) are on the line 1 again implies that line 1 is parallel to y-axis; SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is D.
