Click and Tick

by yuliawati » Wed Oct 06, 2010 1:46 am
In the game Cako, a player is awarded one tick for every third Alb captured, and one click for every fourth Berk captured. The total score is equal to the product of clicks and ticks. If a player has a score of 77, how many Albs did he capture?

(1) The difference between Albs captured and Berks captured is 7.

(2) The number of Albs captured is divisible by 5.

let albs =a
and berks = b

from the question
ab= 77

statement 1)
a-b=77

we can solve the 2 eqn...
it will be quadratic...
one will + ve and -ve
since we are looking for a +ve result... we can get one answer... thus sufficient...

statement 2)
can have multiple values..

IMO A

whats OA???

In the game Cako, a player is awarded one tick for every third Alb captured, and one click for every fourth Berk captured. The total score is equal to the product of clicks and ticks. If a player has a score of 77, how many Albs did he capture?

(1) The difference between Albs captured and Berks captured is 7.

(2) The number of Albs captured is divisible by 5.

If a player has a score of 77 then T(tick) and C(click) would be
a) T = 1, C = 77
b) T = 77, C= 1
c) T = 11, C= 7 or
d) T = 7, C = 11

Now if we consider (1) then possibilities of a) and b) gone, because difference is too large.
for c) T =11, total Alb captured could be 33, 34 or 35(for 36 score would be T =12)
and for C = 7 total Berk captured could be 28, 29, 30 or 31(for 32 score would be C =8)

d) T =7, total Alb captured could be 21, 22 or 23(for 24 score would be T =8)
and for C = 11 total Berk captured could be 77, 78, 79 or 80(for 81 score would be C =12)

In above combination only for c) T=11 (total Alb captured 35) and C = 7 (total Berk captured 28) difference is 7
So, 1 is sufficient.

Now if we consider (2) then
for a) T = 1 means total Alb captured could be 3, 4 or 5(divisible by 5)
c) T = 11 means total Alb captured could be 33, 34 or 35(divisible by 5)
we cant definitely say which one so 2 not sufficient.

ans is A.
