A - "for his attempt" is very awkward to me. The whole sentence is wordy and it is also passive "was very"
B out b/c of the "being very reluctant" - this is wordy
C - Since indicates a continuing action, it happened and it is still happening. This is clearly not the case the action ended when he "refused." So, C is outl
D - is out for the same reason as B
E - makes sense the phrase describes him and the verb logically follows
