(C) 2008 GMAT Club - [t]v01#37[/t]

by logitech » Sun Dec 07, 2008 1:36 am
Scientists working on a number of separate projects made contributions to the invention of the radio, such as Nikola Tesla, who was one of the first to receive a patent in the United States for what was then called “wireless transmission of data.”

* radio, such as Nikola Tesla
* radio; including as Nikola Tesla
* radio, including Nikola Tesla
* radio; not least among them being Nikola Tesla
* radio; especially Nikola Tesla

i think all options are wrong :)

but still C looks some what better

Semi colon divides two independent clauses.
thus B,D,E do not contain an independent clause in their second part.

A and C . Use of such as is wrong in A
hence C,

Well so are you telling that INCLUDING Nicola does not refer to radios ?

As i earlier said .. all options look bad to me ..for me C is the best ..
Actually it shud have been written as

i chose A between A and C simply in order to maintain the percepted meaning of the stem. both A and C suck IMO.

E for me too
A - Such as is wrong.Tesla is scientist not radio.
B- Including as is wrong
C - Including tesla seems to modify radio
D - wordy
E - Two independent clauses, joined by semi colon is correct.

To me all options are wrong, but in GMAT you don't have "None of these" option :wink:. So have to select something.

I was looking for something that will not modify 'radio' and E fits the bill.

IMO E

It can't be E.

An independent clause must follow a semicolon. In addition, this type of clause is able to stand alone without any support:

"Especially Nikola Tesla, who was one of the first to receive a patent in the United States for what was then called “wireless transmission of data.”" This makes absolutely no sense because of the words "especially" and "who." EDIT: Actually, for this reason alone, it cannot be "B," "D" or "E."

Choice "C" makes the the info on Tesla a modifier of the original independent clause.

All options look equally bad to me..
Nikola Tesla should be closer to "scientists" if u want to use 'such as' otherwise we will have a brand of radio called Nikola tesla....

E looks better than the rest but it has a long way to go.
