By contributing to humanity, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to agricultural scientist and humanitarian Norman Borlaug, known as the "father of the Green Revolution.
A. By contributing to humanity, the Nobel Peace Prize
B. For his contributions to humanity, the Nobel Peace Prize
C. A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, it
D. Through his contributions to humanity, the Nobel Peace Prize
E. As a result of contributing to humanity, the Nobel Peace Prize
Starting with the answer choices, C and E are right out. Their structure uses an opening modifier to illogically describe the Nobel Peace Prize. That leaves, A, B, and D, which all start with prepositional phrases.
A--"By contributing..., the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded..."
B--"For his contributions..., the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded..."
D. "Through his contributions..., the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded..."
For me, the best way to choose is to use logic. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded for contributions, not through or by contributions. I would go with B.

In my opinion there is a problem in this question. Option B is the best but don't you think that there "For his contributions" is modifying that person and there should be Norman Borlaug straight after the comma?Bill@VeritasPrep wrote:By contributing to humanity, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to agricultural scientist and humanitarian Norman Borlaug, known as the "father of the Green Revolution.

I agree that it would be better, but GMAC is pretty good at giving us questions where we're choosing the "least bad" answer instead of a great answer.ziko wrote:In my opinion there is a problem in this question. The OA is B. However, am confused with the introductory modifier
saying
For his contributions to humanity, the Nobel Peace Price was awarded...
Bill can you please shed more explanations on this?

In this sentence the award is given more importance than the recipient. Hence the construction X(award) was awarded to y. For his contributions to humanity here actually modifies Norman.gmatdriller wrote:The OA is B. However, am confused with the introductory modifier

There are always exceptions to rules given in the GMAT books.
