Brutal SC #22

by jangojess » Fri Sep 21, 2007 11:41 am
Most recovering heroin addicts seek to be free of drug dependency and others' prejudicial treatment as well.

(A) of drug dependency and others' prejudicial treatment as well.
(B) both of drug dependency and also of prejudicial treatment.
(C) both of drug dependency and also from prejudicial treatment.
(D) both of drug dependency but also from prejudicial treatment.
(E) both of drug dependency and of prejudicial treatment as well.

OA : E

In E, wont both and as well be redundant?

Why do we need to have as well in the end and also will it create some problem with the sentence (in E).

Please clarify.

Thanks
Mankey

I went with E because of its parallel structure. A, B, C and D are not parallel. I believe because "of" comes after the "both", then an "of" is required after the "and". If the sentence read "of both drug dependency and prejudicial treatment", then I believe that would be correct and one would not be required to repeat the "of".

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I think the as well is extraneous, not grammatically incorrect. Since the others are completely unparallel, that must be the correct choice. Maybe a red herring?

E is right
E confuses with as well in the last of the sentence. I read somewhere that as well is only an additional when it is given in last and does not interfere with the sentence. Not sure where i read.

A - parallelism error

"Both X and Y" is the correct idiom.

usage of "also" with "and" is redundant -- B and C ( wrong )

E is correct.

I agree with you. We do not require "as well" at the end.
