Dear Friends,
I was having problems in answering the following question.
Deliberately imitating the technique of Louis Armstrong, jazz singer Billie Holiday's
approach to singing was to use her voice like an instrument, in that she ranged freely
over the beat, flattened out the melodic contours of tunes, and, in effect, recomposed
songs to suit her range, style, and artistic sensibilities.
A. Billie Holiday's approach to singing was to use her voice like an instrument, in that
she ranged freely over the beat, flattened
B. Billie Holiday's approach to singing was to use her voice in a similar way to how
other musicians play instruments, in ranging freely over the beat, flattening
C. Billie Holiday approached singing by using her voice like other musicians played
instruments, ranging freely over the beat, flattening
D. Billie Holiday used her voice in the same way that other musicians use their
instruments, in that she ranged freely over the beat, flattening
E. Billie Holiday approached singing by using her voice like other musicians
instruments, ranging freely over the beat, flattening
Please help.
OA after some discussions.
I have picked option D
Regards
Deano.
Billie Holiday

I think the answer should be A. Everything has to be parallel to "recomposed songs" so "ranged freely, flattened out" are in parallel. Can't see an idiomatic problem with the sentence either.
What's the original answer?

Actually the answer should be D. Tough one. D also is parallel since "ranged" and "recomposed" need to be parallel. And the comparison in " in the same way as " and "in that" seems correct.chufus wrote:I think the answer should be A. Three issues here.
1. Who or what is imitating Louis Armstrong? Billie Holiday, not her technique. She uses her technique to imitate Armstrong. That eliminates A and B.
2. "Like" is followed by a noun phrase. C violates this rule.
3. In E, "musicians" should be possessive "musicians'". Also, the phrasing implies that Billie Holiday uses both her voice and other musicians' instruments.
