800 ANYONE?

by djc » Fri Jul 25, 2008 2:40 am
Hi Guys,

Just wondering whether anyone knows anyone with a perfect score?
I have perused trough the pages and do not seem to have come upon an 800. Does any body have any statistics about how frequent(or infrequent) they are?

Regards

Hi,

Every year an average of 50 guys manage to score the perfect number. Considering that over 500.000 test takers take the GMAT per year, these guys are so rare that it's easier to find Bin Laden having lunch with Bush at your own dinning room.

Are you willing to score 800? Go forward pal! But remind, if you are not a genious, it will take you a lot of effort.

By the way, I think that Lunarpower, one of the top experts here, took 800 last year. But don't really know what he has done with it. It doesn't seem that he has applied to a b-school. Perhaps it was only for the fun of destroying the monster.

I have absolutely no doubts that I am not a genious but I like to aim high. Apart from the usual og and the kaplan(which I have heard is tougher)what else would you recommed for the pursuit.Would at least want to be good enough to tempt fate.......

For sure I'm not the right guy to teach anyone how to get a high score.

Two weeks ago I receive admission to the executive MBA, entry fall 2008, that I pursued with only 550.

Remind that GMAT is only one of the issues that admission committees evaluate.

A lot of people here take GMAT too serious freaking out with anything lower than 700. I know people who got admited to INSEAD with 650 and to Chicago with 690.

There is a funny story about LBS refusing all candidates with 800 during 2006. So an extreme high score means only that, an high score and not a red carpet on the admission door of the top 10 b-schools waiting for you.

Wish you all the best to your MBA app.
Regards
Luis

800 requires an element of luck, which you cannot control.

Should you aim for 800? Sure! Go ahead. Let us know what score you get.

I aimed for 800. Scored 770. It is NOT impossible. I screwed up my Quant and managed just a 50!

My friend K from India has scored a 800 (Q51, V51) on 11 Jul 08.

Atleast I personally KNOW someone, who is a 800 - a genius!!

Those kinds of anecdotes are simply ridiculous IMO. One can more forcefully argue that so many more candidates who score low on GMATs (say below 600) are never even considered at all, while anyone with a GMAT score of 800 is seriously considered all the time. While not every 800 scorer may gain admission into every school he or she applies, that same 800 scoring applicant certainly would have better chances with a score of 800 rather than a score of 600.

For anyone who scored a 600 or below and somehow got into a top rated b school with some kind of killer essay and extremely unique background, that same individual would have gotten in that much easier with a score of 800. I'll strongly stand by that argument.

And yes, it was Stanford. And it was only for one year. The next year, Stanford accorded admissions to some applicants with a score of 800 I'm sure.

Hi Neo,

I really didnt mean to sound arrogant or too wise. I had set my aims and had worked albeit only for about 2 months. It was a little disappointing because I had finished my quants section 8 mins in advance and yet a mere 50 made me wonder that had I timed myself properly and been less overconfident[:P] I would have managed a 51 and may be a 780. But I all said and done, i am pleased with my score and efforts. Thats what matters finally. Doesnt it?

But as someone rightly pointed out, a high score is just a score. The admission council, I presume, would be looking at much more things.

cheers

karthik
