Appointment Canceled!

by FH85 » Tue Apr 09, 2013 6:34 pm
So I just decided to cancel my GMAT appointment. I have taken a few practice tests and was not even able to break 400. I could not decide if I should just take it and see what happens or go take it and if I didn't feel right about it hit the cancel or not show up. After reading a few posts I just pulled the trigger and canceled. I think my study schedule was a little all over the place. I kept doing practice questions but did not see to be getting any better. I think I had to many gaps in my understanding of concepts in both verbal and quant.

A little background on me.
I did my undergrad at Devry in finance and got a 3.0. I've got about 2 years at an investment consulting firm, contract job at major private bank, and 2 solid undergrad internships under my belt. I would like to get into top tier 2 schools (i'm a realist and am pretty sure there are not any Devry Alum at any of the top 10 programs).

I'm pretty sure I made the right decision to cancel and did not want to have a low first score plus Devry on my app. I think I just need to hit the books and get a solid score on the first try and go from there.

I wanted to get some thoughts on how top programs will view my going to Devry when the next app inline probably has just as good as a resume and went to a top 25 undergrad?

Hey FH85 - you posted in a forum that's mostly meant for sending suggestions to Beat The GMAT staff about the site, so it got a little lost.

To respond to your question, we'll actually take a shortcut and refer you to what we said to someone else in another post this morning: https://www.beatthegmat.com/am-i-just-be ... 20641.html

The bschool adcoms will be looking to see what you did in college, not just the ranking. The 3.0 is pretty borderline; this doesn't point to you as the top-of-the-class student. But that's OK - it's not the only thing that matters. The adcoms will care just as much about what you've done since then.

If you have a strong track record of impressive results in your career, then that can carry a lot of weight in this process. A strong GMAT score will also help you a lot. And, if you did especially poorly in any classes that are bschool-relevant (calc, stats, econ) then you might consider retaking that class this summer, to boost your academic profile and show the adcom that you're serious.

There's lots of moving parts to an MBA application. If you're OK with a Top 30(ish) school and not fixated about Top 10, then you should be able to find a home somewhere good. It all depends on what you've been doing with your life since college and how you present yourself in the apps.

Hope this helps, at least a little!! The BTG boards are obviously a great resource. Good luck with everything and keep us posted!!
