Help! I just need at least 500+

by lorneth1 » Sun Mar 11, 2007 8:39 pm
This may sound crazy but I only need at least 500 to get into this certain program but I don't think I can do it. I've been avoiding math ever since high school and my foundations are really weak. Any suggestions on how to get this target score? I'm afraid that I will fail miserably on the math area because of my lack of background and discouragement. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi lorneth1:

The best thing to do first is to create a strong study strategy for yourself. I encourage you to visit the Beat The GMAT Blog, https://beatthegmat.blocked

and the GMAT Resource Wiki, https://www.beatthegmat.com/wiki/

There's plenty of info there to get you started and to help you review your math skills. Best of luck!

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a possiblity that before doing this 80 day preparation to get 500 in merely a month? I guess I want to try to study less and hopefully get it then if not I will take the longer approach. Suggestion? Thanks again.

It's possible, but may be challenging. Check out the Wiki--there is a resource listed there that provides advice for preparing for the GMAT in under a month.

The first thing I would do is get a baseline of your performance. Take a GMATPrep test and see how you score.

Agree with Eric - you need to take a test right away and figure out what you're dealing with. Then we can help you decide what you need to do to get there. Good luck! :)

Is there a way to score 500 on GMAT with just good verbal alone? Or maybe 10-15 on the Math side? Any help would be appreciated. I guess I'm leaning into the fact that I have weak math background, I mean WEAK! Thanks.

I'm not sure - but a 500 is just under the average score (530) so you'd be talking a 90+ percentile score in verbal to offset that low math score... that's pretty tough. And there might be something in the algorithm that won't even allow you go get that score if your math score is so low. (The scoring algorithm isn't public, so it's tough to predict what will happen in such an extreme situation.)

Thanks Stacey, I guess I'm just trying to boost my confidence a bit. I'm really bad in my arithmetic side but maybe I can get away with data sufficiency even then I'm not even sure I can get a high score with the verbal. I'm thinking of taking the GMAT in 3 weeks just to have a feel for it. Like I said I just need at least 500 maybe with a few reviews here and there will get me through...

Have you taken a practice test yet? Take one of the GMATPrep tests and see how you do.

Stacey,

I know that I need to take practice test to measure my current standing but I tend to loose focus and start to drift away during practice. I ended up guessing a lot knowing that this is only practice and assuming that actual GMAT will be different. That's my problem.
