About GMAT

by aim-wsc » Wed Jul 19, 2006 12:46 am
First of all I recommend to visit https://www.mba.com
This is the official web site of the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).
GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) manages the GMAT & Pearson VUE business of NCS Pearson, Inc. is the company which conducts the GMAT tests.
( earlier the contract was with ETS till Oct 2005.but now VUE is in charge of conducting the test.)

Also note that: this thread will cater only for GMAT related questions. STRICTLY GMAT TEST.
No specific questions like: " what s the answer of this question? A B or E?"
NO.
No time managing strategies,
No coaching classes
No other recommended sites.
No advertising.

Just an official site and us; thats it.

so heres to start off with...

About GMAT:
GMAT is a standardised test delivered in American English to gauge (oops i typed in British English!!!) test taker's ability of how he/she cope up with the MBA course.
Business schools believe that GMAT is relatively the best indicator of academic performence in ones management / MBA programmes.

About the test:
The GMAT test consists of three main parts, (which then further classified into sub-parts.) they are
Analytcal writing assessment
Verbal
Quantitative.

also termed as
AWA
V
Q
respectively. (note that i ll use these abbrevations for rest of the thread)

AWA is a writing section and has two questions.
they usually called as
Analysis of an Issue and
Analysis of an Argument.
Each question has thirty minutes (30 mins);
that makes a total of one hour session for AWA.

In V section your communication skills in English language is tested.
It has total 41 questions and time alloted is 75 mins.
It consists of three types of questions namely :

Sentence Correction
Critical Reasoning
Reading Comprehension
also termed as
SC
CR
RC
respectively.

Note that these three types of questions randomly occur, not following any particular pattern.
except for RC, bunch of questions serially follow for a given passage.
That means if one comes across a question based on passage given he/she should assume that
next questions will be based on the same given passage.

( this kind of informatin may sound very elementary but i was asked such doubts many times, honestly!!)

The third section is Q.
It tests ones mathematical/ numbers skills.
In total it has 37 questions and alloted time is 75 mins.
It has classified into two types of questions occur randomly.
they are namely
Data suffieciency
Problem solving
also termed as
DS
PS.

THANK YOU.
more to come... 8) . about the sub parts of sections.

Thanks for initiating this thread, aim-wsc! I'll try to contribute...

For those people who are studying on their own, it's important to develop a good study plan early in your preparation. Please visit my blog, https://beatthegmat.blocked, to get a sense of what a self-directed study plan could look like. I studied for the GMAT on my own last year and kept meticulous record of my preparation through this blog.

Best of luck!

Free material

by beatthegmat » Wed Jul 19, 2006 8:26 pm
Every person should download the GMATPrep software from MBA.com. It's free GMAT practice test software that features actual, retired GMAT questions.

GMATPrep is the most accurate indicator of how you would perform on the actual GMAT. No other prep company (Kaplan, Princeton Review, etc.) can provide a simulation of the GMAT that is as good as GMATPrep.

There are two full-length tests on this software. My advice is to take one test at the very beginning of your prep to get an initial sense of how you would perform if you were to take the test today; at the end of your preparation, take the other practice test to guage how much you've progressed and preview your performance on the real test.

Download the GMATPrep software here: https://www.mba.com/mba/TaketheGMAT/Tool ... in2006.htm

GMAT Overview

by beatthegmat » Wed Jul 19, 2006 8:28 pm
GMAT Overview, from the MBA.com website:

The Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®) is a standardized assessment—delivered in English—that helps business schools assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. Schools use the test as one predictor of academic performance in an MBA program or in other graduate management programs.

What the GMAT® Measures

The GMAT® exam measures basic verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills that you have developed over a long period of time in your education and work. It does NOT measure:

* your knowledge of business,
* your job skills,
* specific content in your undergraduate or first university course work,
* your abilities in any other specific subject area, or
* subjective qualities—such as motivation, creativity, and interpersonal skills.

Format and Timing

The GMAT® exam consists of three main parts, the Analytical Writing Assessment, the Quantitative section, and the Verbal section.

Analytical Writing Assessment

The GMAT® exam begins with the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). The AWA consists of two separate writing tasks—Analysis of an Issue and Analysis of an Argument. You are allowed 30 minutes to complete each one.

Quantitative Section

Following an optional ten-minute break, you begin the Quantitative Section of the GMAT® exam. This section contains 37 multiple-choice questions of two question types—Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving. You will be allowed a maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section.

Verbal Section

After a second optional ten-minute break, you begin the Verbal Section of the GMAT® exam. This section contains 41 multiple choice questions of three question types—Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction. You are allowed a maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section.

CAT

by aim-wsc » Mon Jul 24, 2006 2:28 am
OK
Thanks eric for contributing...was out of town and will remain on & off for some time.

so here it goes more about GMAT in general:

This site has well classified sections in the forum that can be easily identified as types of questions (ie SC CR etc)
(i cannot call it sub-sections anymore, since GMAT is no longer a paper based test)
Last year, GMAT became 100 % computer adaptive test (CAT); earlier in some contries it was conducted as pen-paper test.

So, whats new?

Whats CAT?
:Unlike paper based test, CAT (Computer Adaptive Test) is a type of test in which the questions that a test taker's going to face are not pre-determined.

You get one question at a time. That means you do not know (& you cant predict) the next question unless you answer the current one. The next question is entirely based on the earlier answers the test taker has given. That means your answers decides your next questions. The computer constantly measures how well you are doing on the test and presents you with questions that are approporiate to your ability. This is how computer adapts itself with you.
( I ll present more critical and bit complex analysis of how it works ...the CAT and all, later on)

one more point:
Two sections of the GMAT are multiple choice sections and other one is essay /writing section.

the two sections V & Q have Multiple choice questions with five options available. You have to choose among those five answer choices.
Although GMAC ask to give the best possible answer; i must tell you that theres no second best answer choice available. GMAT has one and only one correct answer for each question. Rest of options are 100 % incorrect.
So please note that GMAT is a Multiple choice test but not a multiple answers test. You have to choose the only one option as your answer.
