Ideally, you should take the GMAT in enough time so that you have a few weeks to dedicate your full attention to the remainder of your application. However, it only makes sense to take the GMAT well ahead of time if you are prepared. You should not rush your studying or abbreviate a preparation course if it will prepare you to earn a higher score. So the short answer is, get the GMAT out of the way as soon as you are prepared to give it your best shot.
