In the search for alien life, astronomers have recently begun studying a promising region, a solar system that is populated by a number of potentially life-friendly planets formed by fragments of an exploding star some 7 million years ago and features many of the geological and climatic prerequisites for the evolution of life.

I would go with A..............wats the OA
B,C wrong because of tense "featured"
E wrong because "solar system" is singular and therefore should be followed by features
D wrong because "ing" form is not required as "solar system that is populated by xxxxxxxx and features" should be the proper usage in order to keep the sentence parallel.

Hi Bakhtior,
I think.. planet with life can have climate, solor sytem is just combination of planet/Sun/blah blah...so climatic prerequisites may refer to planets... what do you say???

hi guys i tend to disagree with all posters and vote for D
imo it should be read as
planets formed by ........and featuring many of the...
past and present participles (used as adjectives) can be ||, according MS correction 4-edition page 216

I have updated the post with the OA. Can you please explain what is || in participles? I still couldn't understand why the gerund here is correct.gmatmachoman wrote:Great my vote for D.. It tests parallelism in "participles".clock60 wrote:hi guys i tend to disagree with all posters and vote for D

i`ll try to say something, but i am not needed guy here
a system..... that is populated by a number of... planets formed by fragments of an exploding star some 7 million years ago and featuring many of the........
we have || marker here-and, i think we must || two modifiers of planets.
a) can`t be the answer, features here is working verb, and can`t be || to anything,
only one possible variant: that is populated.....and features but again wrong, there is second that?
to me construction: that is populated....and that features..... can be valid but.. but we have no such option
for the same reason feature in e, and had featured in c are also wrong, but i saw that nobody picked for E or C
b)if we write the full version of the part of the sentence it will look like
a number planets that are formed by fragments and that feature many of prerequisites....
they simply omited both that here and transformed active verbs into participles,
are formed results into formed, and feature into featuring, i read somewhere that it is reduced adjective clause, but not sure
so left with D

The gerund and the present active participle look the same, but aren't. The gerund is a verbal noun (Running to catch the bus is not fun) while the participle is a verbal adjective (The man running to catch the bus looks angry). In those example sentences, the gerund is the subject of its sentence, while the participle is modifying the subject.
Other sentences like the one posted (but shorter):
His meal arrived cooked to perfection and still steaming.
She took pictures of the people crowded together and singing songs.
