A thanks Note : GMAT Over 780(Q50, V47)

by reachac » Thu Aug 07, 2008 7:55 am
Hello All,

Just appeared for my GMAT today, and I am really happy to finish it off on a high note.

Brief Score Report
Q 50
V 47

Total 780

Wana thank all the mods, consultants, tutors, experts and all my fellow members with whom I have had had innumerable discussions :).

Like most of the people, my job responsibilities were a very big roadbloc in my prepration, second only to my utter laziness  . But I sincerly feel that every second I spent on this forum, discussing and learning concepts with all you very talented people was worth it. I felt that my working hours were mosta the times really harsh on my prep and so most of my prep came in from surfing thru this forum during the office hours :)

Beacuse I did not have a very well laid out action plan for the prep, so m probably not the rite person to write a debrief which others could find inspiring but I would be more than glad to answer any query. Please feel free to post here or PM me.

Once again thank you all!

Test day experience ummm was a lil scary,

I had booked my GMAT date just 4-5 days back, so was really really nervous. Had not taken many practice tests, infact had tried my hand on only 2 tests up until this saturday. Last four days, I took off from the office, did the following prep

1) 4 MGMAT tests 740, 760, 750, 770
2) 2 GMAT PREP + 2 RETAKE 730, 770, 770 , 780
3) 1 POWERPREP 780
4) 2 KAPLAN CD2 and CD 3 670, 710
5) Revised MHSC
6) Studied and then revised RC and CR from kap800
7) Revised OG verbal section
8) Worked out a few math problems to get the feel.

Did not have much time to review my mistakes but these tests helped a lot in building my stamina to sit for 4 hours and conc. Made a mistake in that I didn't attempt AWA on majority of the practice tests I gave, realized my mistake as I sat down to practice AWA the day before i.e Wednesday. So wrote AWA on the last two practice tests. Makes a lot of difference, starting the quants section after taxing your mind on the AWA for an hour or so. My advice, please do attempt the AWA in your practice tests.

Test Day Experience

I was really nervous on the test day -> Reason: Had not got enough sleep for the past 4-5 days + had studied a lil too much in the last day of prep. Please avoid both. Again the nite before the exam, I couldnt sleep, anxiety got me, please involve yourself in activities you enjoy, be it playing pool etc, reading your fav novel, movie , anything but try and think less bout the result ( lol I can feel how easy it is for me to write this!). In short, just chill out a bit.

Take adequate amount of fluids both before and during the exam, for me, I had taken gatorade alongwith, enjoyed every bit of it during the breaks + it provided for the much needed energy.

Plan out to reach the test centre in time, esp those of appearing in New Delhi please make sure that you visit the test centre before the exam day as locating and then reaching that place is a big task in itself :(.

Well the post is getting bigger, I'll put in the catual test experience in the next post

ACTUAL TEST EXPERIENCE

When I first entered the test centre, the silence was deafening. But watching other test takers surely helped me settle some nerves. :)

Took about 15-20 minutes to get thru with the formalities before the test.

Was assigned a workstation, an erasable notepad etc. First task was to select the 5 B-schools from the drop down list that appeared, theres a search mechanism available and it helps a lot to select the school u are looking for.

AWA:
AWA didnt pose any problem whatsoever, got the argument question first and then the issue question, Both topics were pretty much general and certainly debatable :)

QUANTS
The starting questions were a breeze, just creamed thru them. But I could sense the level rising with every question after the 4 th one. Also a chain of DS questions came up after the 6th up till bout 13th or 14th.
Questions were really clear and easy to understand, no ambiguity watsoever in the question language. I felt that the calculations involved were quite big as compared to those involved in GMATPrep but the level was pretty much the same. Got quite a few questions on probablilty and combs towards the end. Also number line concepts could be found in some appreciable number of questions. All in all quants was pretty much ok, not very divergent from those encountered in GMATPrep. I don think scoretop fiasco has had had much impact on the level of of the questions goin up

VERBAL

Verbal too started of pretty well with 2 SC followed by 2 CR. Qs 5 was an RC. Pretty neatly written Rc of bout 30-40 lines. After the RC I could immediately feel the level increasing with some thought provoking CR's and 2-3 SC's with either the entire sentence underlined or just 1-2 words underlined. Got 4 RC's in total, 3 of them were rather short length(30-40), the 4th one was a monstrous 70 odd lines philosophical scholarship that appeared as the 3rd RC around the 23-25th question, I knew I was doin fine :)...also most of the RC questions(barring those of the first one) were inference based questions. Quite a few CR's were "complete the passage" and inference based. Finished off verbal well in time with bout 12 mins to go. But I think that verbal appeared alil more tricky than it does in the preps may be because I was stressing myself to get every question rite but, the honest feeling was "This question seems tricky, ummm am I thinking on the rite lines, another review or shud I mark it??? ummmm" :)

Congratulations, that is one of the highest (the highest, may be) scores on this forum. Best of luck with the rest of the application.

First of all congratulations on such a wonderful score. This is the highest score that I am writing a post to.I don't even know if anyone on this or some other forums has managed to score a higher than a 780.

I have registered for 22nd November for GMAT. What prep would you suggest for brushing math concepts for all the material and then good practice for Data Sufficiency. Also can you please advise the same for SCs.

Regards

P.S. Excellent Excellent score.
